BT Fibre Optic Broadband

Somebody called me from BT today saying I could take up Fibre Optic Broadband unlimited for £24.99 PM.

I queried the fact that I would need to have new cabling to get the new service - they said I didn't and my copper wire would take me to a point where it met the fibre optic cabling.

I said I wasn't interested and didn't give details of my current provider!

Are BT that desperate??

I got rung up today too and offered £17.99 a month for Infinity (not unlimited), and £7.99 (I think) for the first 3 months as am not currently with BT. 18 month contract. They say if I move house to somewhere without fibre optic, I will have to see out the rest of my 18 month contract with the nearest equivalent normal broadband they can offer. I think they do the installation for free but not sure about the new router.
They are doing a very hard sell. I told them what put me off was the long contract and their off shore call centres who nearly drove me nuts when I had a problem with my phone line. Thinking about it. So far no 3rd party ISPs seem to be able to offer the same deal for the same price.

However I did say I'd read they cap the speeds during peak hours, which is when I do most of my internet use. I don't want to have to log on at midnight to get the benefits of FTTC!

BT have a large call center in Enniskillen (where the BT reps that come on here work) & also in Belfast city center.

If you are with another company, register with the TPS and you wont get any sales calls from BT, if you are with BT then they were offering you a much faster broadband for the same (published) price as ordinary broadband, dont want it ?, just tell them 'no thanks'..cannot see whats desperate, its pretty comonplace with all Telco's
As Infinity is fibre to the cabinet, then you dont need any new cabling, but part of the deal is a managed install so the engineer ensures your wiring is as good as it can be,
Many posters on this and similar boards would give there eye teeth to be in an infinity area and get next generation broadband

Can they actually say its Fibre Optic when its connected to copper cabling from some point somewhere? My brother who by the way is no expert had the same thing with either Virgin or Sky not sure which, but when he realised they were not going to bring the Fibre Optic cabling to his house he told them to stop and uninstall what they had already done....

  • BT are, in general, only installing fibre into homes for new build properties.

Everyone else gets what is known as 'Fibre to the cabinet'. New fibre optic cable is installed between the exchange and new roadside cabinets at the ends of streets to transport the high speed data services. At this point your existing copper cable is interfaced, and it then carrys the data + your voice service to your house in much the same way as present (except in this case a technology called VDSL is used instead of ADSL).

The fibre to the cabinet service is faster than standard ADSL because the transmission distance over copper is much shorter. You get 'up to 40Mbps' download with FTTC (typically 20-30Mbps) with 10Mbps upload (which is generally higher upload speed than available via Virgin). It is thought that BT may increase the service to 100Mbps download, which is probably the highest possible whilst still relying on copper telephone pairs.

The reason you don't get a fibre into your house in most cases is, obviously, cost. Still, if it was available in my location, I wouldn't turn it down!

Incidentally Virgin Media has much the same arrangement - the fibre optics only go to the cabinets in the streets, and they still rely on Coaxial copper cable between the cabinet and the houses using a technology called DOCSIS 3.

Complaints to the ASA against Virgin who for some time have been advertising their product as "fibre optic broadband" weren't upheld, despite that fact that they also do not provide fibre to the premises.

I am with o2 BB and happy with it. £10 pm is very tasty.

    I am with TPS.

£24.99 is too much really cos would have to add line rental and calls to that too.

Why don't they just write to customers by email or post. Plusnet email regularly. I hate the "how are you, are you aware we can offer you blah blah" just desperation in my view.
