If there are any worries about an area and particuraly if it is known for trouble, then you can ask for your co-ordinator to go with you, or pair up with another collector.

I am an early collector, and at the moment I am having to work more to the times needed by the co-ordinator. I was speaking to her about this today, as I am trying to juggle things around the kids, without having to pay for child care. Once the actual collection starts she said basically we get given our work load, and it's up to us when we work the hours as long as it gets done and at least 60% is evenings and weekend. So if you want to work long days you can get your work load done in a couple of days or if you want to do a couple of hours each day you can do that as well.

I think it is all too easy for people to say 'don't bother', when they don't even have any idea what the work entails.

Thanks for your reply! Still very indecisive, but will ring the helpline tomorrow and may just go along to the training course anyway.
  • Hi, I wonder if there any Co-ordinators or anyone that could help me out here..

I accepted a final offer for a Census Collector position which was contracted to start on 21st. I have still not been called by my coordinator, despite phoning the Census Recruitment people every day and being told to expect a call back - very, very frustrating.

I have been told by Census Recruitment that I will be paid for contracted hours, although it's now the end of the week and I haven't even started or had contact. I have been entered onto the payroll and am able to log on and submit timesheets, is there anything I can do to make sure I get paid for this week does anyone know?

It might seem cheeky to expect to be paid for no work, but I have wasted a week where I could have been working, every day being told that my co-ordinator will call later in the day or the next day. It's getting silly now.

If you are full time I would be inclined to say s0d them, and submit 8 hours per day on the time sheet for this week, only trouble is I think that the coordinator has to ok the time sheet before it is submitted to payroll.

How many hours are you contracted to work? 8 hours a day could well put you over hours. I am contracted from 25, but because this week is not a full week, the week actually runs Saturday - Friday, we had to work 18 hours. But that could be a way of getting someones attention by submitting time sheets, they would have to come up on some ones work load I'm sure.

Unfortunately it probably isn't the co-ordinators fault, they probably haven't been passed your details, which is really poor, my co-ordinator was given my details last Friday, which at least meant they were able to contact me at the last minute.

Without knowing who your co-ordinator is I can't really see another way around it, is there any way the help line can give you your co-orinators details, have you rung the payroll people?

I am a co-ordinator. If you have access to the payroll system then you should have popped up on your co-ordinators screen. One thing I can think of is that your co-ordiantor has left (we have had one person leave in our area) although in that case the Area Manager should have picked you up.

The other thing (and I'm thinking on my feet) is that your co-ordinator hasn't noticed you are an Early Collector if you came up late as we are now having the Collectors starting on 6th April coming up on the screen. If you weren't showing til after Monday then they may not have realised you were an Early.

We did all have emails this week though asking us to check dates etc of our team as they came up on the system.

As mentioned your timesheet would have to be authorised by your co-ordinator (or above) before you got paid. But as you siad, it may prompt someone to call you if it is on the system unauthorised (especially if they didn't realise your were an EC).

I would ring Payroll or HR helpline to find out what's gone wrong.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

What happens if by some miracle everyone sends back their census in the area your meant to be covering, do we still get paid or do we have no job? I am working part time at 25 hours do we automatically get paid for that amount or is it still based on the actual amount we work?

Can anyone also help me with a few questions:

I have a part time job working 12 hours a week already, will this mean that my census job is going to be taxed at 40%?
Do you have to change your car insurance to business use for them to pay your expenses?
How is the holiday pay calculated?
How much do we get paid for completing the training (online and classroom)?
When do we get the bags and equipment we need for the job?

    Thanks

    Thanks

I work for Scotland's Census so info may not be the same but here's some answers:

If everyone sends back the Census, I would imagine you would be asked to help out another collector however assuming you have a contract, you should still be paid.

I can't imagine that your 12 hours a week job earns so much that you're paying any tax at all so it's unlikely you'll need to pay any tax. If you are above the threshhold it will be 20%, not 40%.

You should be insured for commuting in your car, if you use it for work.

Holiday pay is calculated pro-rata. Can't remember exact figures but legal amount is something like 24 days a year (don't quote me on that number though!)

Training - as far as I'm aware, it's built into the agreed payment (£750 in Scotland) but you can claim travel expenses to the venue.

In Scotland we picked up all equipment at our training session but I've heard that in England you need to arrange to collect from your Co-Ordinator.

    Hope that helps!

the holiday pay calc is in the contract of employment - section 7. i'd better not paste it on here

i believe we get 3 hrs for the online training and 4 hrs for the classroom.

i presume we get our gear on 6 april?
