We have a filing system.

Then a safe place where important things should be put, so they don't get lost in the filing system.

Then a really important place for things that we don't want to lose amongst all the other important things.

Then a super important place for things that are too important to be put with the things that are put amongst the things that we have put in the really important place to avoid them getting lost, even though they are not really important.

Then we have to decide where to put the things that can't go in an important place because we won't know which place and where!

Then we decided that the whole system is unsafe and so passports go in the bedside draw, along with birth certificates for some reason.

We have had wills written, they are somewhere important, but I haven't a clue where.

If you go into places like Poundland or stationery shops, you can pick up cheap packs of 4 coloured plastic envelopes with a pepper. They're great for keeping important stuff in as they're distinctive and see through .... unless you then put them in another bag, inside a suitcase, at the back of the wardrobe, in the spare bedroom ... where you've since piled up all the stuff from the other spare room you're decorating.

In general, you don't need to be able to find your own will. When the time comes, that's someone else's problem.

BTW, all the passports used to be kept in my wife's bureau in our bedroom. But the kids insist on 'looking after' their own now, so they can be on the floor or anywhere really.
