I've started wondering why people say that Chinese is inferior. Not just slate but oak and granite and almost any natural resource.

I don't whether it is or not but China is a big place, it can't produce everything inferior. How do you produce inferior oak trees, for example?

Slate from Islington. Made me giggle.
I think it's about lifespan. You want some that'll definitely outlast you before a problem starts to occur.

Welsh slate should last a good 150 years or so, Chinese much less, maybe 60 years. Chinese slate often contains a lot of minerals that degrade, such as calcium, they're more brittle too. Chinese slate can rust and also isn't that good in cold climates.

Just phone in sick for the rest of the week.... that's the trouble with working, it sucks the life out of you - then what's left of you has to drag more work home to do.

All on a promise of "better things to come", "more money", which rarely materialise. I've worked my nuts off all my life, loads of free overtime, putting the hours in, going the extra mile (I've even won awards for that) ... and nothing at the end of it. Promises are dust.

And then you start all over again, at the bottom again ..... and so the cycle repeats.

Well, I've now had four years off - and it's been great :)

No need. If you win the lottery you can have it craned in over the roof.

    Forget I said that:

It tastes lovely, trust me. Mixed with apple juice and mixed seeds including linseeds gives it a sweet taste. Good for skin too.:D

I haven't eaten a Pot noodle since I was about 10 I think...they were really luxe in the olden days....and Vesta dried packs that made 'chinese food'.

    How about fresh soup tubs?

I can't get my head round the yoghurt with bits in it thing. My Mum eats it every day and is a real organic freak but still got cancer. I think subliminally I blame yoghurt with bits in it because she eats gallons of the stuff (well not gallons because she's not that big, but ykwim).

I have to say that I haven't had a pot noodle since I was about 24 and moved into my new house but had to wait 2 months before I could afford a cooker. All I had was a toaster and a kettle. Subsequently I was sick of pot noodles and toast by the end of that time. I don't think my current "guilty pleasure" will last long!

Ohhh.... Vesta though that takes me back. In the Chow Mein packs you had two types of noodle. How exotic was that for people who weren't used to any type of noodle?

I would love to be able to have pot soups, but I have a problem getting one I can eat. As a vegetarian with a potato allergy it really cuts my options down! I get half way down the list of yummy ingredients thinking 'ooh that sounds lovely" then find myself shouting "b*gger" at the chiller cabinet in Tesco. I will get thrown out one day.

I hate yoghurt with bits in. I detest it. Lovely smooth milky goodness destroyed by a bit of something that gets in your teeth or the back of your mouth. YUCK. But, otoh, yoghurt used sparingly to not be as much as to be gloopy but enough to bind muesli, stop it being dry is ok. Some ingredients exactly producing a wildly different response from me!

(edit: the worst is coconut yoghurt which is delish but utterly destroyed in its creamy perfection by the desicated bits they feel they should throw in to convince its real coconut. The worst apart from those ceral ones which I simply cannot think about they make me fee so ill. Chunks of fruit are different, I don't mind them.)
Also I love muesli with fruit juice. Love it. Yum. Sheesh: I feel really uninspired about my oatmeal this morning now!

It is the most amazing morning. The mist has filled the valley in a soft, summery way. I decided, when I went out earlier, to take the top road through the village. Its not at the top of th big hill, but rather near the bottom, but a lot higher than us! And a slightly wider road with a speed limit so I thought a little safer than the winy narrow one with no speed limit in the mist.

Up on the top road and the village there is no mist at all, I didn't no that till I got there. Driving a long and looking towards home acroos the valley it looked like a giant's cauldron of steamy, bubbly goodness. The sun will probably burn through it quickly: it shows we've have some moisture around, which is wonderful!

Always nice to see something beautiful early in the day. Yesterday I saw a really beautiful woodpecker....blazing spring green.

The sealing doesn't look too much of a pain - you paint some stuff on with a brush, leave it to dry, do the same again, do it again in 6 months and a year, and then every few years. OH has volunteered....

It should be fairly easy, one tip I can give you there is a cleaner out there which has a small amount of sealer in it. Use it every time you mop and it saves the resealing (but sounds like you won't have to worry about the resealing).
Sorry I can't remember the name though but I should imagine most independent tile stores would know it.

    didn't bother me either!

In fact, in a previous place I had UNSEALED old terracotta tiles -the worst for holding stained especially the paler ones- in a kitchen and loved them. They showed wear much like original floorboards, and yes, bore the evidence of cooking, but in a beautiful way. They had a beautiful patina I hadn't expected and in the right place I'd jump at the chance. DH laid slate in our bathroom in London, and they were ace. I loved them. Having lived in lots of places maintaining seals on various floors its not such a big issue to maintain tbh, not much more than any other spring clean, and less often. when its frequent after laying you're probably still interested enough to find it exciting!

we have original flags which we'll try and match and extend those into the garden and utility areas. Everywhere else down stairs will be wood. I would have flags in the entrance hall too, but it would break up two areas of wood and I'd rather have the continuity.
