I can't believe that they are not more commonplace here. We may not get the same array of creepy crawlies - thank goodness - but even things like midges in May and daddy longlegs later in the year get annoying. I can't think of a single house that any of my Aussie family has that don't have them. I can't think of a single house that any of my Pom family does.

They are incredibly cheap and hugely increase your quality of life.

If (when?) we move back to Europe we'll be having some of them.

I grew up with fly screens too. My mother reckons there is a business waiting for someone over here to do them well.

I think your mum is 100% right. Why invest in air conditioning when in our climate you just need light and airy rooms? If someone could invent them with stick in pollen filters as well - which I know is possible - then it could stop the misery for hay fever sufferers too.

Yeah, in a few (7?) years. Probably to France.

I couldn't see myself living in Northern Europe again (UK included) as I hate the dark winters.

Southern France would be perfect for me. I speak the language and have lived in France more than once so I know what I'm getting into both good and bad. Having moved out of Superman Investment Banking into Ordinary Mortal Banking, I have a much wider choice of where I can work. Before it was basically New York or London and I don't want to work in the States due to the holiday thing, ie hardly getting any.

I've seen them for sale before, in those A5 leaflets/catalogues that arrive with newspapers - listing all the stuff you never knew you couldn't live without, at 3-4x the price things should be.

They've always been on my list of "Must haves", except you need to be settled to go to the hassle/expense of fitting them... although if it were actually a problem for me then I'd just get some netting and velcro. Generally, I've not had bugs/things of sufficient quantity to get round to sorting it out.

I think, maybe, UK old-fashioned plastic strips at doorways was the British solution, although I've not seen those in huge numbers since the 1960s.

They could be quite stylish in a retro sort of way. In a nicely done up 60s sitting room you may even be able to tie them in with lir's bird lamp. I quite like 50s and 60s style though I probably wouldn't want it in my own house as the chairs are too small and not squishy enough.

Are your wife and kids French speakers too? :) (My mother's school french has the most shocking antipodean accent) How old will the kids be then?

I was thinking yesterday about all the restaurants I'd love to take dh too in S. of France. Those amazing places you only find out about by word of mouth and you get no choice at all about what you eat but they bring plate after plate and its all fabulous. I bet I'd forgotten where they are now :( ooh....I'm thinking about the best duck I've every eaten now...

I don't want to go to NYC either...because of the family thing i.e. far too many of them ;)

I was wondering if beaded curtains actually work for flys and their nipping friends. There are super nice beads about though any cost a fortune, I but PN has seen great suppliers...

We're really lucky neither of us get bad hayfever. Just as well, as across the big valley and up the hill from us there are a couple of hundred acres or so of it. The smell from it has been lovely this year. :)
