I'd happily emigrate to a warmer climate, my wife, not so much so. The two things I think I'd miss most are, (1) family, being away from them for long periods of time and (2) being able to cheaply expore europe. I might not always like European interference, but I do appreciate travelling other countries.

Being able to take the family out the beach after work, would be a big plus. It's often too dark and cold to go out in the evening.

I miss being close to Europe more than I miss the UK.

It's great being able to go to the beach after work. In the evenings in the winter if the kids can't sleep we'll sometimes go for a walk on the beach in the to tire them out.

A dog, or one of those high pitched sound devices that animals can hear? On second thoughts, I think possums can give dogs kidney problems, so it's probably not such a good idea.

I'd put poison down but you can't kill native wildlife without a licence.

Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

No idea about possums. We're going to have to deer fence and bird net our patch.

I just got an order, and actual advance order, for chickens. I'm going to find that very, very hard.

Cheers. We're just down the road from Lane Cove National Park so there are millions of the blasted things around the place. Bird netting combined with traps if required sounds like the way forward.

Apparently alpacas are good at keeping foxes out when, for instance, they’re trying to get at chickens. Whether they would also keep possums out might be worth looking into. Except that that would probably be quite a lot of cost and, obviously, you’d have to have sufficient space for them and maybe vets and feed bills and chipping them and fences and all the rest of it. Also they’re social animals so it would be unkind to keep them in anything less than twos and really they need to be in a group of at least half a dozen and preferably more to have anything like their proper life. So maybe not practical or doable. But perhaps at least worth considering and looking into if there’s no other solutions readily available. And they look lovely and yield fur or hair or wool or whatever it’s called which can be sold or made into clothing and such like and possibly you could breed them and flog off the offspring to recoup the cost if you’ve got the time and effort to do so. Apparently they’re mostly quite friendly and generally only get uppity occasionally when they’re breeding and doing hierarchy stuff. Supposedly their bigger cousins llamas tend to be more aggressive on a regular basis and spit at you, not very nice. Let us know if by any chance you do actually decide to get some alpacas as a result of this suggestion. That would tickle me. I love video and pictures of them, they appear to look at people with what looks like a high level of awareness and consciousness, almost like you can communicate with them a bit and more so than most other animals, or at least it looks like that to me. Yes, I like them. I think they look great, quite graceful and intelligent with amazing faces and all kinds of groovy hair styles and colours. Fantastic, splendid, lovely and beautiful.

bird watch: squirrel has worked out that they can hang upside down from the pole holding the fat balls holder and feed! Squirrels also find it acceptable to poop in the seed tray.

Went for a lovely walk around the lake in St Albans park. Surprised that it is still frozen when the temp is +8C. Very funny to watch the ducks trying to walk on the ice and slipping on their little webbed feet.

Do you remember my tree grump? Well, one of our new neighbours called by and said they'd bought a tree for their daughter but she's already bought one and they wondered if we had....:) I offered them the money for it but they refused absolutely. Its a real cutie of a tree, about four feet tall, and we have a box to stand it on and its in our only room with a low ceiling, so its PERFECT.

My EA says my sellers have some delays with their onward purchase. Their sellers have now gone on holiday until next Saturday (18th). My solicitor is still hoping to push for exchange before Christmas and completion in the first week of the new year. It still feels too good to be true.

DS and I had an hour to kill after school on Tuesday again - DD was at an after school activity. We drove round to the new house again, visited the local corner shop (looks to have quite a decent range of stuff) and timed the journey back to school to pick up DD (10 min). And no level crossing! Unless you have spent several years living somewhere where you have to go across a level crossing on your way to almost anywhere, you probably cannot imagine how much I am looking forward to not having it.

Meanwhile I am fed up of coughing, and want to get better from this dratted cold that I've had for more than a week now. The problem is that between teaching at work and my kids at home, I never get a chance to rest my voice.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)

Years ago I had a genuine full length 1940s Possum coat. It used to be my mum's, some wartime present from a bf. I binned it about 15 years ago when I moved, it was quite manky by then.

There are a lot of alpacas and llamas where I live, the other year I went for a bike ride and stopped at a pub and a bloke walked his two llamas down to the pub and tied them on the railings outside while he bought his pint.
