Audi A4 Diesel - Cost £3000 and again was approx 6 years old. A complete white elephant, a pain in the bum, failed the MOT every time and it was always expensive to get through. I detested this car, the cockpit felt too busy, too cramped, the car itself felt flimsy after the Passat but it was quick off the mark at junctions, something the Passat had not been. I got the car as part of my seperation as ex hubby did a sly one and instead of receiving his bonus (circa 6k), of which we would have been entitled to some of, he got his boss to buy him a car instead, so he didn't need it. The cambelt gave out on this one (despite only having done 8k miles) and I sold it to the local garage as the engine was completely knackered.
I would really hesitate to buy and Audi.My dad's was at the garage routinely being repaired for long term faults or niggly things. We used to joke about setting our watches by the audi...Monday 8:30 was its normal garage appt. A good friend has an old passat. Drives a lot for her job, and its very, very reliaable.0 -
Dopester, could I interest you in a trip? Lol.
I might go and buy some clothes to cheer me up. Cars are such depressing iyems to buy. Would love to do the trains but it seems stupid to take 40 minutes for a 10 mile journey. May well buy a disposable car for less than 500 now.
Thank you to everyone for such lovely advice.0 -
Installing and configuring a new domain today. I buy various domain names when I fancy them, then they lurk, unused .... but I've just decided to activate one, so set up the hosting for it. It'll be a recipe based one. Wordpress + a plugin, of course
I do wish I had a kitchen, fridge, freezer .... so I could actually cook. And people that would eat stuff I make. When you always cook for one, for yourself, it's not very inspiring to bother.
I figure initially most of my recipes will be without photos - because until I make them I can't take photos. Bought some chestnut flour yesterday, planning on kicking that around for some Xmas nosh.... £7/500g - saw me coming!!0 -
It's no good me listing my cars/experiences, so I shall precis them:
Mostly big old sports car styles, big lumbering rear wheel drive things. Welded the floor back on most years to get them through the MoT. Spent many a wintery morning trying to push start them alone, which is quite amusing as you have to push and steer ... trying to gain enough speed to leap in, get it into gear and jumpstart it. I used to be fitter
Moved onto more fuel efficient cars... they get you from A to B quickest and nobody cares what car you drive so you might as well get something unsexy.
Now into "how much can I cart about easily in this" mode.
My number 1 rule for cars though is: Never borrow to buy a car, in case tomorrow you don't have a job to pay for it.0 -

You can buy really good chesnut flour from Shipton Mill at http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/detail/711193_Shipton_Mill_Organic_Chestnut_Flour_500g.html for half that (it's worth saving up all your bread, cake, rice, and etc orders, and splurging there once every quarter, because there is free shipping if you get over £35.)“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

It started out as one of those "Oooh like the sound of that" random ideas, as I love chestnuts. I then gathererd some recipes together and it became "wonder if I can get that near me", so I put a shout out on a local forum and was advised to go to a couple of places 20 and 35 miles from me, then I was out yesterday and it was a "let's see if we stumble across this stuff while out" half-4rsed-mission.... and we did. Now, I'd have not bought it, but I felt a bit obliged to as we were in the shop, they had it, it was the last bag - and my sibling was giving me a stern look of "buy it, you found it, what's the problem". Felt uncomfortable about the price, but it was easier to spend a fortune right then, than to have hours of beatings about not buying something I'd said I wanted.
I hope it's not sh1te now.
Just added a bag to the basket and went to the checkout, to see how much postage would be. £3.62. Total £7.01. So it would have cost more to buy one bag online
One bag is my quarter's baking needs0 -
Yeh, it would, you really need to save up or the speciality and weird ingredients for one massive splurge, and then it's much cheaper to buy online. Single items cost a lot more.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Well, I've done 135k miles in mine (petrol engine), all driven by me and it has never broken down, needed minimal repairs (other than routine cambelt replacements which I've done religiously - two so far). I'd get another one in a shot. People I know with diesel Audi's have had less good fortune. I think the audi problems tend to come with second hand cars, because a lot of salesmen/women drive them, and then sell them on after a couple of years after they have been treated quite harshly.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Misskool, do I get the impression that you have taken job B (or was it job A?) and are starting work soon with a longish commute?
It's worth looking at BCA if there's a centre near you. Car dealers don't want to buy cars at this time of year, as it's a slow time anyway and the country shuts down for 2 weeks over Xmas. So, it's a great time to get a bargain at auction. I bought my latest car at auction this time last year, and it's been faultless - 3 years old, just came to the end of its lease, and perfectly well looked after by main dealers. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
