Er... quite a lot of the time, yes, it is.

If the copyright holder uploaded it, you can watch in accordance with the youtube terms of use ( a lot of the time, the copyright holder didn't upload it).

These terms of use do not permit you to download it, they only allow you to stream the content through their software.

OK...I just watch things on you tube.....(ie I press play and watch it there) usually its video cam stuff (short clips) or music. I'm guessing music is probably a no-no for the future:(

    poop.

Youtube has a separate license agreement with all the main record labels, and performing rights societies. Watching music on youtube is legal.

As far as blogging goes, OCD is very helpful. 'Tenacity' doesn't really cover the helpless feeling of blogging away for hundreds of posts, and getting 2 odd russian visitors in your first month. It does work. But slowly.

A lot of people who work in libraries have OCDs. We joke that working in the library service there are so many OCDs to go around that its possible for us all to have a different one, from cleaning books, to shelving them in straighter lines than a North Korean massed gymastics display. My library OCD is that I have to push the chairs back under the desk when people walk away from them. I hate the untidiness (which is quite ironic if you ever visit tifositowers). I have however discovered that this is a useful OCD to have as - while out and about chair straightening - you can see exactly who is surfing for !!!!!! and then terminate their session.
My mobile was 2nd hand in 2005, it's not modern at all. No speakers with it.

Pastures you are truly fascinating. You are the only person I've ever come across in my whole life who somehow manages to come across as both a luddite and a technical genius at the same time. Please don't ever change, it's unusual and special (spelt the normal way) all at once.

if you run out of bandwidth, pm me the links, we can download and burn them onto a dvd for you
It's getting that way, but I am just randomly bouncing around in Youtube thinking "mm that looks interesting". And I've got enough really to at least watch 1-2 of them. I'm downloading them, but not watched any of them yet.... and each one is instructional, so that means it needs to be watched a few times probably. So I'll be OK. And not sure if this PC plays DVDs :)

It's all to do with "what's the point?" ... if there's a gadget then I don't need it; I didn't need it yesterday, so until the day I need it what's the point of having it.... and .... with gadgetry, the genius part is that the longer you leave something the better kit you get cheaper.

So, it's best to leave ALL electrical/gadgetry goods until the very very very last minute that you can.... until you absolutely HAVE to have it.

It saves a fortune now - and ultimately if you ever actually needed the thing, you end up with a better one.

    :)

Oh - and I've never had spare money, being single meant there just wasn't the money for fripperies and I guess I've never got out of the habit.

Youtube video downloading isn't illegal as long as you are not caught.
Somewhere in the last 2-3 hours I've seen something that said you are allowed to download stuff from Youtube, in accordance with some provision that it's for your own use to watch again ... and it mentioned some Betamax case.

I'll see if I can get a reference for that now.

Edit: couldn't find where I saw that earlier, and PC's running like a dog as I am downloading :)

Whoever wrote that article was a bleeding idiot, the betamax case was an American case 40 years ago, and American law has been substantially amended on copyright since then (IIRC they weren't even signatures of the Berne convention then) especially with regard to online content by the DCMA in the united states . it is fair to say that with the enactment of the DCMA, the betamax case doesn't apply to online content. There are a variety of legal cases going through the courts on these issues, and the American law isn't settled.

In terms of the UK, the betamax case never had any standing, and in fact the reason we can record TV shows and watch them is that it is a term included in the broadcasting license for TV broadcasters; there is no fair use exemption that covers downloading or recording in the UK.

Well, I'm now saving from the temp file it creates when I've watched the video. And as it's just for me to watch, there's nothing to get "caught for" :)

I've now got my ear piece working, the PC was expecting speakers (which are in storage). It took three separate places to change it from speakers to a headset before the sound was working, but it's working now.

And my PC's so bl00dy old/slow I then had to reboot.... and having rebooted and connected it takes me 4 minutes from clicking on "Launch Firefox" before I am here.

    :)
