Weekend away followed by meal out with eldest at uni. Nice to see him, though he wouldn't let us see his student house as it wasn't fit to be viewed. He did let his brother in, so he would know how students lived!
I never knew you shouldn't climb a ladder in bare feet. Why ever not? I have much better grip in bare feet than with shoes. I also drive in bare feet in the Summer. Sounds a lovely weekend Silvercar. Regarding the hinge thing, its news to me too, though according to my dad and brother I have committed a terrible H&S error. I caught the sole of my foot in the hinge and it cut a big v in the bottom of my sole and it is also very bruised. I didn't even realise I had exposed hinges on my ladder. I would imagine all ladders are different.
Still, my dad's ladder OCD continued today. I asked him to look at a light fitting in my kitchen and he insisted on using the "right type of ladder" as the wrong type could have apparently cracked my kitchen floor tiles. I have now decided that there's far too much to know about ladders and that I should leave it to the professionals. You've all had far more interesting weekends than me as the result of my steps faux pas, its all my own fault and frankly, I'm jealous:o.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Not the greatest weekend here either - took the kids to a drama school open day and was actually shocked at the prices - for a mere 600 quid a term two DWs could spend a couple of hours a week 'learning' to be obnoxious showbizz wannabees.
Posted an update over at the other place.I think....0 -
I've been researching courses/costs/distances/options... and created a big calendar in html using notepad so I could plot them all out and see how it all fitted together and where choices could be made. Dull as anything that bit was.
Found a couple of evening classes, low level but as I know nothing that's a good place to start; one started last week, so hoping to get onto it this week. Thing is, evening classes are for 2 hours - and it's a 40 mile round trip. Also found a one-day course in something else, another 40 miles but at least that's for 5.5 hours.
I think evening classes are flawed. They advertise them, then cancel them as nobody's enrolled (or only 1-2 people did), so you rarely end up doing anything - and I think one of the issues is distance and duration. Not many people are in a position to set aside one night every week to do 30-50 mile round trips, with the fuel costing more than the course. They need to do more 1-2 day courses. Evening courses don't help the tutors either, they're paid for the 2 hours teaching time and the costs of getting there/back, along with short notice of bookings being cancelled can mean they've turned down other work because it was in their diary.
The world's changed and people's lives are too changeable.
If I did everything on my list I've got about £1000's worth..... with an interesting £5,000 option too (best left for 2012 I think). One is an 8 day, residential, course in France. But I don't know how to use trains to get to France so that'll be on the list for a few months, then I'll ask in the foreign holidays forumI'd need a passport first.
So at the moment I am about to tuck a few more hours' learning of my new hobby under my belt and see how the rest shape up. I think I know what I'm interested in, but I might discover new techniques I want to study/follow/explore, so my calendar-style listing just helps me see what's on/where/when.
I also had an accidental compliment. I had shown my quick piece to a 'sniffy'/posh sibling 2 days ago and tonight they accidentally said "... and your piece was clearly very well made, top quality ..." and it'd slipped out before they'd realised they'd said it. First compliment ever, for anything I've ever done, in my whole life....and there it was... slipped out.0 -

I didn't know what those particular words meant (I knew a few) and I lived near Brixton and heard that on a daily basis. Mostly from idiotic white girls with stupid accents. I just looked up the other ones I can remember and they're equally offensive!
I don't think I ever spoke like that(!) but I remember someone helped me dress up as a rude girl by removing one leg of my jeans and ripping up the other. I must have looked a proper idiot. I'm cringing just thinking about it
Spent much of Friday and Saturday tipsy (not so much to be hungover) and today clearing up the messGot into bed at 11.20 but at least I'm winning now

Maybe they only work in urban areas. A long time ago I taught evening courses in college and they were always well attended, never any danger of the class being cancelled and the topics were as boring as anything - basic adult learning. The sort of courses where you expect people to drop out after 1 or 2 weeks.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Course cancellation IS a big deal where I was living before buying too. Not sure what it is like here, but I'm guessing a LOT better.0 -
Overwhelmed. Our very good friend's niece has been very, very poorly over the last week or so, had been transferred to London and was given the news late last week that she needed a heart transplant urgently. They are all devastated.
Unbelievably, friend has just called to say that she has a new healthy heart waiting for her and she's going to theatre right now. Thank God to the poor family who have lost someone precious this weekend who were brave enough to give this little girl a chance. :A
We watch and hope.

what are you making then jelly?
I made a major sized omelette! With pretty much anything that was in the fridge thrown into it. And a bountiful amount of cheese, with orange juice, and Tiger bread - thickly sliced.

Doozer, how old is your friend's niece?
BTW, I've got my donor card here, and I told my family. Although whether my heart would be any good for someone is another question. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
