wageslave : “It is a dreadful, horrible thing to be a gypsy. We can pretend it isn't but thats a lie.
We really are the lowest of the low and while it isn't politically correct to have a go at other minorites we are fair game”
But is it necessary to define yourself by your origins? Or is it possible to transcend them and adopt a different scale of values if you feel that the original ones are unacceptable, in part or whole? Or that people’s opinion and perception of them are unacceptable. People from all backgrounds can be either good or bad or a mix in between so surely how you conduct yourself is more important than how others of your background behave or are perceived to behave? Just because some gypsies have a certain reputation doesn’t mean that you have to be like that, does it. And just because you might have been born a gypsy doesn’t mean that you have to identify with it as your identity. You can be yourself and reinvent yourself and be someone else if you want to. And you can just be kind of anonymous and not particularly any kind of person if you want to. If you’re a good person then surely that’s what matters and counts. I don’t feel responsible for how some people from my background behave, not at all, I’m nothing to do with any of that, my family made a break away from it a long time ago.0 -

Whoosh - PN and TT8 talking SEO and microblogs - I thought it was a Senior Executive Officer.
Whosh - LJ and VT talking books - haven't had time to read one in years.
Whoosh - even WS talking bringing up kids doesn't tie in with how I do it.
I like to think I know a little about economics but I find there is very little of that on the board now just poor quality political hackery.

I went to a local charity shop the other day to donate items (too lazy to ebay).
I was amazed at how high tech charities have became.
They assigned me my own donor number, and proceeded to place stickers on all the items.
When they sold, I received an email notifying me how much for.
Plus they're now reclaiming income tax on donated items, like charities do for cash donations.
As I said, amazing.
Fascinating! Are you able to say which shop? Is it national? Notifying you of every sale is time consuming I would have thought but good attention to their donors and may kepe people bringing items in.
I haven't got into ebaying. DH keeps saying he will start an account but never gets any further and I can't be ar**d. I like to do the occasional car boot though, to get rid of stuff, make a few bob and enjoy the atmosphere.0 -

Reading your last post suggests something that I've thought for a long time but not been sure about - that you now live in a house. What we would say is taking on a gorgy lifestyle. I'm guessing that older daughter is used to this but youngsters aren't.
But kids are resilient and they'll be fine. They aren't going to adapt overnight but adapt they will. I also hate to say this, but Irish travellers aren't objects of pity, they are objects of fear, a bit like Moslems ironically. That's only because people don't understand the lifestyle. Some won't try and will be prejudiced but not all will. You can't change that. It's note your problem that some people are hateful. They are the defective humans, not you.
I am mostly an object of fear
I didn't want that for the brat, I don't want that for my girls.
I know it sounds pathetic, I dont them to be an object of pity
What is worse, you explain it to a three year old and she understands
She chooses, three years old and she chooses
She goes to nursery and comes home. Nantie such and such had something I didn't have
I realise I have did this. I am not a fool

@PN,
Round my way,the "must have" piece of jewellery is a charm bracelet. And then you need to add new charms, at regular intervals. Very clever are charm bracelets. You buy the bracelets and then find you buy the charms, but the charms are designed to only fit (or at least only look right) with that brand of bracelet, so back again and again to the same brand to purchase more. and more. and more again.
So the chain costs £20-80 and then each charm is £25+. Then they bring out special edition charms to collect and so it goes on. What was a reasonable price bracelet, once fully charmed becomes a fortune.

The main thing with anything is to not over-step myself. Also, to understand the separation between "people who actually make/manufacture these things" (not me) and "people who buy pre-manufactured bits and pieces and assemble them" (me).
If I were a foreign manufacturer/exporter, then I could create something unique, but I am to be a buyer of bits and bobs for now. If things turn out well, I could change and become a minor manufacturer, for one-offs, but never a wholesale manufacturer/distributer.0 -

I have to say I do understand about old money and not showing what you have. For me it is very important that nothing I wear or drive suggests anything other than practical - as soon as I see someone with an expensive watch or car I immediately assume they are inadequate and need to justify themselves by others perception of their monetary wealth rather than being comfortable internally with who they are.
I guess my poor kids may have to suffer a lot of bullying while they learn this self-confidence.

You wouldn't say that if you came out with my crowd.:o
Pandora is clever. Apart from the marketing, their chains are a tiny bit narrower, so their charms can have smaller holes and only fit Pandora bracelets. Also their bracelets take 20 charms.
For pure brand marketing example, Thomas Sabo chains are just plastic beads on elastic with one silver hook loop that takes upto 3 charms. Clever branding, image placement....££££I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
