Depends on the mechanic, as essentially you'd be paying for their time.

People I know have gone to auctions have usually taken long time friends or family members who are mechanics with them.

Dunno why (possibly because I know nothing about cars) but the idea of buying a car via auction feels (for want of a better word) unreliable to me.

I don't have mechanics in my family. :( They all have useless jobs and interests my lot.;)

Here is my feeling. The insurers are saying they can't give time scales because everything is so backed up from December. So I thought well...I'll hire a car for a fortnight-month. That's as much as people like Dopester and ....someone else a long time ago, don't remember who...suggested to buy a banger for a year! So might as well take the gamble of buying...

Is that chips and gravy? Yum yum...has been a favourite of mine since I was 16 ish.

I must admit to liking cheesy chips.....

Chips & gravy are the don!
Mushy peas too! (licks lips & gets very hungry quite quickly smiley)

The cheesy chips thing was wierd. I didn't go for it myself. I thought that if I did, I'd be able to actually feel the blood thickening in my arteries as the meal progressed.

Yet I say that & remember a time when chese & chip butties (with mayo) on crusty bread was a weekly treat for me.
What were you asking for gravy with?

I love these little differences i regional things. Speaking of chips and of gravy: I've never had chips with gravy...but have hear of it a lot and think, tbh, it sounds quite pleasant. Still not sure I'll ever try it though. No have I ever had curry sauce on chips...which I do not think sounds nice.

I like chips with vinegar and mayonnaise. :) As much as I like chips. I can take or leave them.

Gravy with mushy peas on battered sausage & chips.

LIR if you are going to insist on reading in the bath, I am going to insist that you try chips & gravy!

You haven't lived til you've had chips & gravy!

It can be worth it. I'm sure I'm being a little paranoid about it. I've known a fair few people buy cars from auctions, so it isn't all bad. I just don't know enough about it, so am outside my comfort zone.

I have a friend who, if any of a small list of american bands announce a one off show in the uk, will go to an auction, & buy a car just to make the trip! As long as it gets him there & he sees the show, he'll be happy! (The getting back home is a side issue/mere detail)

I don't have it that often (cheezy chips) but it is a nice treat with some salt and vinegar.

The chips and gravy I picked up whilst working at a fairground and not having many pennies but it was only one cafe which did it, all the others looked at me rather weirdly when I asked for it and asked if I meant curry sauce, so it was nice when I went to my chief bridesmaid's house on the outskirts of Manchester and they thought it very normal.

Mushy peas? Eurgh, never, no way, horrible....but then I don't like peas.

Our other like is for a cheap chinese...ribs and chips, one portion of chinese chips and one portion of ribs in sauce, dribble the sauce over the chips and split the portions, that will feed me and the boys, gives us the satisfaction of having a chinese takeaway but on the cheap as they usually throw in the prawn crackers free of charge.

On particularly short times, chips with the sauce from the ribs on it's own....chinese take away for less than £3.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I've never had a battered sausage either :undecided

I will try chips and gravy then, if I ever see it somewhere. TBH I don' ever recall seeing it as an option.

I DO like mushy peas. :)

Arriving a bit early at the end of Ladies' Skittles Practice last year, I was amazed to find them all, tucking into a huge plate of these.

Damn good they were too! :rotfl:

I love garden peas/petit pois and mushy peas. I eat huge amounts of peas - my favourite veg.

Mash, mushy peas and faggots! Yum!

LIR, it will be a worthwhile journey on a day/night out to locate yourself chips & gravy from a chippy (perhaps even with a battered sausage?)

A fair few of my days out were to seasie style places, which meant evening strolls with a chippy visit were essential.

I've said it before, but I prefer to buy from a 'little man,' who buys at the auctions and sells, via Autotrader or similar, from home. Alternatively some garages source a few cheaper cars this way. Either way, way you can read the trader and the car. I have walked away from cars because I didn't like/trust the guys who were selling them.

A good 'little man' will have picked the right motor from the dozens in the auction, had it HPI'd and valeted, and might even have done a basic service. If you are lucky, he will also have the service history. On a banger, you will pay a few hundred more than he did, but I have always felt that was worth it for the lack of hassle. :)

I've bought from private vendors too, but it's quite hard locating those old blokes who do 3000 miles a year at 40mph, apart from when they are in front of you on a winding B road, that is! :rotfl:

Oh I always thought faggots were sausages made of the stuff that wasn't even fit enough for normal sausages. Not sure what bits I was thinking.
