It's not right but let's be honest, everyone does it. I worked for Butlins Pwllheli in the accommodation allocation dept over twenty years ago and exactly the same policy of 10% overbooking applied. Towards the end of a Saturday you would be shuffling people and chalets left right and centre. If there was any overflow they got put into local hotels.

    Airlines do it too.

Yes any company will do it..................

IF WE THE CUSTOMER PUT UP WITH IT!

So lets tell em NO WE WON'T

I was shocked by the Watchdog programme. There have been a number of occasions when we have used a Travelodge because of the convenience of the location and we have arrived late at night. We have never had a problem with the booking but it would have really been very inconvenient (an understatement) if we had been turned away.

I have not been a fan of the American system of punitive damages (as I understand it) but it seems to me that that system would be appropriate in cases like this. A small fine for the inconvenience to the individuals affected by not getting their prebooked room and a massive fine to Travelodge for their systematic policy of bad treatment of their customers.

Part of the problem is that by offering such cheap rooms (£15 Supersaver rooms) they encourage people to book speculatively but in order to then make money they have to overbook. Personally I'b be happier if they had no quite such cheap rooms but less overbooking.

but if people are still booking speculatively they're going to be charged £15 for that night, so travelodge will get atleast £15 for that room whether the person turns up or not. To pay £15 then turn up and find your room has gone because the hotel assumed I was booking speculatively would not impress me. I'd rather pay more and be guaranteed a room in the area i chose. but then, in my case, we use travelodge after a night on the town, when driving to another hotel wouldn't be an option.
hope the hoxton don't overbook or we shall be shafted on staurday! :rotfl:

And once you get a room you probably wouldn't get much sleep from all neighbouring rooms being occupied by working girls and their punters.

No food. Often attached to a disgusting Little Chef. Who else would stay in the places?

I'd rather kip in my car and use motorway services to freshen up.

The law needs to be changed so that no airline, hotel etc can overbook. They already have got your money if someone doesn't turn up so they shouldn't be able to make double the money on no shows.

Funny that if I take something from a shop and don't pay for it it is called theft. If they take your money and don't provide a service then it is called business. Anybody else see the irony in that?
  • I have often stayed in Travelodges and I have never had this problem, even when arriving late in the evening. I also have not seen a single person posting here who has had it happen to them - we are all just going on the cases mentioned in the Watchdog programme.

Before we completely condemn Travelodge, how often do they actually have to turn people with a guaranteed booking away?

If you had watched the programme closely you would have seen employees saying it happens all the time.
A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

A young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent,
the helpless, the powerless, in a world of criminals who operate above the law.
