cold weatherV.winter fuel payments

Although i DO believe O.A.P.s are/SHOULD BE entitled to £250 plus to help in winter-BUT,am i the ONLY ONE who thinks that people on DLA-especially children-should be entitled to the extra fuel money too???I THINK MAYBE IM NOT?its costing me £40 a week on gas alone to keep house warm enough for my young son, whose on DLA for respiratory problems, and as cold/damp exacerbates this i feel its a benefit which should be given to DLA claimants as well,NOT just £25 a week-in this weather that goes nowhere!and do O.A.P.s get the extra £25 a wk ON TOP of the lump-sum payment??i dont know, but if so its only FAIR that disabled/sick people should get lump-sum payments also!

You post makes little sense - do you have a specific question?
    Gone ... or have I?

Yes if OAP's get the qualifying benefits they are also entitled to the cold weather payments when they are triggered.

This question gets thrown up every year as to why people on DLA don't get the fuel grant, maybe the government expect you to use your DLA.

I agree that the winter fuel payment going to pensioners but not to DLA recipients is unfair. in my opinion it should be means tested and then pensioners and disabled people on low incomes could receive it. Like pensioners, not all disabled people are poor.

As for the cold weather payment; I don't think people on DLA are entitled to that either??
C'est le ton qui fait la chanson
  • My son gets HRM and HRC, and as I am on IS, I get a cold weather payment when triggered. My son's breathing is compromised in cold air and also in damp weather, so my heating is set to come on any time the temperature drops below 16 degrees (including overnight - it's been on quite a bit recently :)). He has had respiratory problems (and lots of other problems) since he was born twelve years ago, and isn't likely to improve.

I use part of his DLA to pay the additional costs of having a disabled child, but would welcome means testing for the winter fuel payment. However, this isn't likely to happen, but I am grateful for the additional help that we already get.

OP, have you tried chest physio? It helps my son, although it doesn't get rid of his problems completely. It does make him a bit more comfortable though.
  • hi,just wondering what the entitlement criteria for the £25 weekly winter fuel payments are,ie do you have to be in receipt of housing benefit etc to get the payment,im on dla /esa support group and living at my friends at the moment and i was wondering if i qualify, tia

Am afraid its an old issue that all OAP's get it even if millionaires, anyone on income support gets it but DLA and working tax credit (adult) doesnt but working tax credit for disabled child does. Not very fair but not a lot we can do. I too have respiratory issues that is certainly made worse by temperature changes etc. I contacted MP about it last year as confused by the DLA + working tax credit disability element just to get eligibility clarified as heard mixed info hence I now know
WTC -disabilty element for adult & no children + DLA = no winter additional payments
WTC -disabilty element for disabled children + DLA = winter additional payments

i say it everytime this old chestnut pops up but DLA is meant to help with the extra costs associated with a disability. To me this includes extra heating.

I sometimes think from reading these forums that anyone who considers they have any sort of disability cast covetous eyes on any other group that they feel get something they don't get.

My husband has extremely bad rheumatoid arthritis which severely limits his mobility. He is not allowed any help with his mobility needs as he is over the DLA age limit. Fair enough, he doesn't fit the criteria then he can't have the benefit.

Winter Fuel payment is targetted at the over pension age people. Everyone cannot have every benefit going. We are just glad that unlike Ireland there is no cut in benefits.

    • a child under five living with you
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

If you are in receipt of Income-related ESA, you will usually receive Cold Weather Payments if you also have any of the following:

    • a severe or enhanced disability premium
    • a pensioner premium
    • a child who is disabled
