These cold weather payments are terrifyingly expensive to the DWP at £25 a pop.

I doubt that the expense could be sustained throughout a long cold winter without some other area suffering. These payments are a comparatively recent benefit aren't they?

I think the year before last, they were £8.50 a time.

ISTR £10, but much less than £25. But the last couple of years have been especially nasty as far as winter weather goes.

I'm not going to bring up the other thought I'm having here, because I know it'll only start a fight. Haven't got the energy for it.

Not always. I have never had a place of my own before this, never had an account with a utility operator beyond telephone, and I think that probably has something to do with it. My credit rating is fairly low, but only because I've never applied for a credit card or wanted to.

We've all have to start with a first utility account. I think it is not an issue with most providers to have a credit meter although you could be asked for a deposit. I believe I was once and after a year of good payment history it was returned to me.

ETA: Our total fuel bills for a month are approx. £50, averaged out over the year and paid by DD. So a couple of CWPs would pay for the whole of my months fuel. We use a lot, our heating is only off about 2 hours a day as I am up until 1 or 2 am and my husband is having an excellent night if he stays in bed after 4am.
