I'd either get him to call in a HETAS registered fitter or do it yourself & ensure the fitter bills the landlord.

Hmm, very dodgy and ilegal. Wooden board? To seal a chimney with flames running through it!

You'd not believe some of the install i've seen.

He needs to get a pro in otherwise he's liable if the house burns down or anyone gets hurt.

are you sure it's not heat proof fireboard? This stuff can be used but it is very fragile and it is recommended you use steel instead.

Fireboard isn't allowed if it's unlined. Stainless steel is most suitable. The other issue is sweeping the flue........you can't sweep it properly through the flue pipe and i doubt you'll be able to sweep it through any form of access door. If the board has fallen down under it's own weight then it definately wouldn't withstand having a brush rammed through it.

Carbon monoxide is odourless and dangerous. I wouldn’t install my own log burner, get a HETAS improved installer to do it. Chimney liners can be put in upside down by people who don’t know what they are doing. You may have too short a chimney, or too long, HETAS fitters know all the calculations and check room size and all that. Better safe than sorry!

HETAS site: hetas . co .uk
A local (Birmingham, Bromsgrove) log burning stove installer: hetash dot com
A story from a HETAS approved installer on YouTube: youtube dot com/watch?v=vcaHK9CMTP4

    Hope it helps!

Better advice (sorry) would be to read back on the many threads on this forum. HETAS fitters, by their own admission, can be a very mixed bunch.

As, under UK law, if you fit a stove it either has to be fitted and signed-off by one of the HETAS cartel, or approved by your local building inspector, the latter is an option if you cant find a local HETAS type who has a good local reputation. You can either self install or get a sensible builder to do it and get the building inspector too approve it, instead.

My advice would be to get local experience of you can. Your chimney sweep would be a mine of information.

I have had a Stanley multi fuel stove removed and want to replace it with a multi fuel woodburner with a back boiler. Can this be fitted into the chimney the Stanley used which did not have a liner. Also does anyone know about Salt fire Stoves. They are sold in Wareham Dorset via e-bay and very cheap £520 for a 12kw with back boiler. Also does anywhere sell good second hand ones.It is a minefield.

To answer your query about Saltfire stoves, I too thought something must be wrong as they are much cheaper than other stoves. But having researched it I decided to go with their largest stove and I can say I am happy with them. Customer service was good too.
It is a big solid (very very heavy) stove that puts most of it's heat to the wet side (heating rads + hot water) more than the room, but that is what I wanted. As far as installation goes I would say either go with HETAS registered so they can sign it off or do loads of research, a plumber that has done them before and go with registering it with building regs. We used a H2 panel to link the gas boiler with the solid fuel boiler stove, which I would also recommend.

Hope this helps other searchers out there.

This thread has been dragged up from some time back. I always feel a bit wary when this happens by a newbie praising a product.

If you've done it yourself and just want it inspected and signed off then speak to your local council Bulding Control office.
They will do it for you (for a price).

Hetas engineers tend to do the installation for you and sign it off all in one go.
It is unlikely they'd sign off a DIY install, which is why the council would be the way forward in this instance.
