Can I make a suggestion - it sounds like your boss must think a lot of you to take you to lunch in order to raise difficult issues (mine would just give me a bollocking and let me get back to my sandwich at my desk....)
. It does sound though as though others may have been bending his ear about you though, given what you say about not being secretive and given what he has said about 'trying to look busy' for perception's sake. You sound like a really nice, honest person but just remember that not everyone is as nice as you, sadly, and you might do well to cover your back in future and just be a wee bit more discreet about your non-work activity
