    Run AVG removal tool

    AVG Remover(32bit) 2011
    (avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1149.exe)

    Then
    Download HIJACK THIS
    http://download.cnet.com/3001-8022_4...3e66c4b678a8f6
(It auto downloads, do NOT click to download anything off the page)
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

that helped alot, have removed avg couldnt do the hijack thing, and then reinstalled avg. Found something to do with skype in the warnings section. I think i will have to unistall hijack this and then reinstall it.
  • for got to mention avg is only free for 30 days, is there a way round that?
  • Frankie - you've downloaded the trial version of their paid-for product. You want "Free Edition" from their website, not "free trial".

But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

do you have a link for that, it would be really helpful, thanks
  • I'm a new user, so the board doesn't let me post links (spam protection).

    Google AVG
    Select the main link
Click on Download Now under "New AVG Anti-virus Free Edition 2011"
Select the download at the bottom of the third column (it'll take you through to a CNet download page)

    Good luck!

I am not bothered whether I use avg or avast; but I followed instructions (as best I could) in the previous posts for avast, and that appeared to work, until the latest problem, then it said my trial was coming to an end, so I boo booed somewhere along the line.

Although I have read other threads and seen options for different free anti virus ware, which I will look at.

direct links to latest versions of avast and avira:-

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

ensure you use the Download latest version, next to the big green arrow at the top-right of the page. Both these are the fully-free versions of the two best AV's out there.

Also, remember to use the removal tools for whatever you have installed at present to remove them properly. Sequence of events:-

    1. download avast or avira, choosing the Save option. save to desktop.

    2. use removal tool for whatever you have installed right now.

    3. run the installer file you downloaded in step 1 above.

    :)
