Airbag Light

So I have a Mazda3 '04. Now the airbag light has come on.

This also happened to the previous owner, of which I have a receipt to say it was checked by Mazda and nothing was actually wrong but the light wouldn't reset.

It is very random, I am now thinking it's because of the weather. (very cold last night etc.)

However - is it 'illegal' to drive with a broken airbag? Looked on MOT and it's not checked.

I don't want to take it to a garage to check, to get told nothing is wrong, just a loose wire. Or to get told loads of it is broken and will cost £1k+ to fix..... So tempted to leave it on and moan at me....

Any suggestions?

  • Ours comes on and goes off again randomly, it also beeps when it comes on.
Not an MOT fail, I'd probably use black insulating tape, cut a small square and place it so that it hides this light from catching your eye.

You say the prev owner had it looked at and it was fine or no fault so why not leave it,

That was a couple of years ago!

They fixed it (nothing was actually wrong with it, I believe they just reset the "computer").

But it has now come on (this morning) and stayed on.

it will be a loose connection that has triggered the warning light. it will need a reset by mazda at i would expect £50 plus

This happens from time to time on my 2003 Clio.

In my case it is a loose connection under the front passenger seat.
If I poke around at the wires under there it goes off... until the next time. :D

Must get around to fixing properly one day. ;)

This used to happen all the time on my Renault Sport 182 Clio

Top tip was to put a paper clip in the connection, Airbag still worked and functioned as it should but it didn't keep dislaying the fault light

Airbag warning lights tend to be amber, which suggests that it's not dangerous (ie; the airbag won't deploy for no reason). Chances are, if the airbag is faulty, it just won't deploy in an accident. You could take the fuse for the warning lamp out, although I'd imagine this fuse serves more than one thing, so beware.

    That's interesting.

How did you test the airbag and come to that conclusion?
