Debit card for a 14 yr old

  • I took my two kids to LLoyds, they both got a debit card. Which they love they both feel grown up and it is helping them learn to budget/save. They do not get internet access to view their account, and now you have to go in branch to check on the balance.

Maestro now has a chargeback facility.

The OP could try their parent's bank as that may make it easier to open a child's account with them. Most Youth accounts come with a debit card now.

that only applies to Maestro, Visa and Mastercard cards can be charged back in the same way as a credit card.

LloydsTSB Under 19's account. If he goes into local branch with a parent and id the account can be opened and they will then issue him with a debit card

Yes but you need to be 18 to be eligible to apply for a credit card. The OPs brother is 14.

He could try a prepaid credit card. These give you all the protection of section 75 for purchases over £100 (which is stronger than the Visa chargeback) and there are some that are designed for younger teens. Some recommendations here - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cards/prepaid-cards#kids

  • Prepaid cards are available for under18s I think - and they should be far more secure for your brother as he can only spend the money you load onto it. I've visited compare pre paid before who have some good deals: http://www.compareprepaid.co.uk/compare-uk.html

Santander 3% up to £500 on 11-15 account if credited each month with any amount.

If the kiddies parents/ guardians have their main current account/ mortgage/ investments with Santander that is boosted to 5%.

    Visa Debit card, online banking.

    *awaits torrent of Santander abuse*

If the OP doesn't want to put his brother off banking for life, I suggest he avoids Santander :)

Given, the other responses about the lack of internet banking provided by Lloyds and Natwest to this age group, I suggest they open an account with HSBC or Halifax. (I can't tell if Barclays offers internet banking to teenagers from their website)

Word of warning for anyone with a different surname. The natwest, who I've banked with for 30 years, wouldn't open an account for my daughter without my original wedding cert, decree absolute and new wedding cert because "she could be anyone's" - what deranged person drags a 14 year old into a bank to open an account other than a demented parent :rotfl:

Also, under 18s will be loosing online banking registrations with HBOS shortly, so if your going to do it, do it soon.

I'm pretty sure that isn't the case as no money is being lent.
