I agree with you and I think it is because we are all giving more thought to what we cook.

Hubby loves meals cooked in the new slow cooker and I got the ultimate accolade for my pea and ham soup - He said it was like he remembered his mum cooking!

Then spoiled it by adding "I don't suppose you will ever make it that way again though!"

He also reckons that every time I go on a diet he loses weight and we eat better.:):):)

    Kim's Challenge

Well just had my shopping delivered by iceland and saved £23.80 in offers and my £10 voucher off...
Managed to get 2 weeks worth of freezer and toiletries and store cupboard things the only thing i will need are fruit milk and bread... the total cost of my week has been 37.38 that included a trip to coop yesterday where i got 6 chicken breasts for £4 intead of £7.98 and BOGOF green curry sauce for £1.32 so thats 2 meals during the weeks to come.... Will keep an eye on my other halfs spending as he seems to fill the car and his belly at the same time and say its petrol!!!! Having found the evidence of scotch eggs and pasties under the seat, he really should learn to clear away the rubbish.... :D

Need to really knuckle down now as my contract at work runs out on the 26th March and not really sure if they will renew it or have to look for another job

So good luck everyone and happy shopping.........

I'm going to give my other half an allowance, he mentioned that someone at work is cutting down on spending and the guys wife gives him money for the month and thats it. So, whats good for his mate is good for him. Will give it a try, it might make him think about what he spends his money on and will help us overall. He's not really a spendthrift but tends to buy something saying we need it rather than looking to see if we can afford it. This way his pocket will tell him he cant afford it rather than me telling him!

Looks like you had some bargains Kim, I've been to Tesco a couple of times this week already for one thing and another (baking ingredients) but now I'm off to Lidl to stock up for the week.

When I worked in a fruit and veg shop we used to reduce bananas that were going black. There was a guy who used to come in a buy a whole box full to make wine, we always used to give him a reduced rate because he was buying the whole box instead of a price per pound, he used to get the whole box for a couple of quid.

If you can find a way to use them up, it's worth asking at your local shop. They were normaly reduced during the week, on a friday I think, getting rid of the cr*p before they stocked up for the weekend.

Also remembered, we used to sell 'horse carrots' these were massive bags of carrots (potato sack sized almost) they were all the mis-shapen ones that people used to feed to their horses, but the bag was about £2, again, if you can use them up, or share a bag between like mined people they could save you a bit, we didn't have them in the shop they were out the back, you had to ask, so try asking (pretend you own a horse if you find it embarassing).
When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt ;)

Banana Bread, it's like a tea loaf really and it's very scrummy, you are supposed to use over ripe bananas to make it so I refuse to use the good ones, I wait until we have a few that have been left too long or I sort through the 29p baskets in my greengrocers. He had bags of 5 grapefruit yesterday for 29p. Shame I couldn't think of a use for them.

    Ingredients
    225g/8oz self-raising flour
    100g/4oz butter
    150g/5oz caster sugar
450g/1lb bananas (the softer the better), peeled and mashed
    ½ tsp salt
    2 eggs
    175g/6oz mixed dried fruit

    Method
    1. Pre-heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.
    2. Mix all the ingredients except the dried fruit together. You can do this in a food processor or by hand in a basin.
    3. When they're all thoroughly mixed, add the dried fruit. Spoon the mixture into a 1kg/2lb non-stick loaf tin, spread it out evenly and bake it for one and a half hours. The loaf is done when a skewer pushed into its middle comes out clean.
    4. Cool on a wire rack, then slice before serving.

  • I can't take part in the February or March challenge yet as I am still doing the January storecupboard challenge. I haven't bought anything in the supermarket since then aside from the essentials of milk, marg and fruit. I had plenty of frozen veg in the freezer and flour for making bread in my bread machine. I have really enjoyed using up all the out of date tins and packets in my larder (and inventing recipes to use them up) and haven't suffered any ill effects. It is now 6 weeks and I haven't got to the bottom of my chest freezer yet! I wonder how long I will be able to go without shopping and will it be a MoneySavingExpert record!!!
