March grocery challenge

kitchen towel, tissues, shampoo, tooth paste, baby wipes
I only buy or would buy the value ranges of these products. I would also buy the stores equivilent of the Butterlicious, I dont buy biscuits (it encourages a sweet tooth), but i do buy a 27 pack of Kitkats a week as a treat but i share them out equally between 5 of us, and when they are gone they are gone.
We only have puddings weekends (but then i tend to buy branded puddings like Viennettas and Cadburys ice cream).
I also only buy value ranges of cleaning products - with the odd exception. I would ditch the Follow on Milk. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
To help out those on the grocery challenge I've found a site that sells all manner of branded beauty products (toiletries, hair, skin, make-up, fragrances etc as well as the odd household thing) at good discount prices.
My biggest find on there so far is Trevor Sorbie's range of shampoos/conditioners sold in 5 litre salon size containers for £6.99 (conditioner) and £12.99 (shampoo). When you think that a 250ml bottle probably costs £2-£3 that's a hell of a saving
Edit: Forgot to add the link  ... it's here"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

You used to be able to get free postage if you went through certain sites to direct cosmetics, I don't know if you still can, I remember one was https://www.ryanaironlineshop.com0

When you use mince make the meat last longer by adding a grated carrot, whatever veg you have in the fridge, lentils and breadcrumbs. Someone has mentioned using oats to bulk it out too.
Those chicken fillets seem quite expensive even if they are bogoff. Buy a whole chicken and use the leftover meat in sandwiches and use it in curry or casseroles. How much are your tinned toms? They're only 17p a can in aldi so why not do one shop a month there and stock up on the storecupboard items that you plan to use that month and are cheaper than sainsburys.
I also agree about making your own cakes and biscuits. A batch of fairy cakes takes no time at all to make, put it in the oven when you're cooking a roast so that the oven doesn't have to go on especially. There's also the health benefits to think of, you know exactly what has gone into your cakes and biscuits so you know the kids aren't getting a lot of addititves and sugar. Sponge cakes also freeze really well if you want to make a massive batch.
I wouldn't advise buying the tesco value baby wipes, but they're not very big or soft as normal ones (aldi ones are fine) so you might end up using more of them. I use normal aldi wipes to clean my bike and the tesco value ones have bleach in them and I use them as disposable cleaning wipes, they're perfectly fine for that.0 -
Julie,
Sounds like you have the idea. Don't be put off if you get a bit off track. It took me all of January and February to really understand where my money was going and where savings could be made without major compromise. For example, I am a total wine nut and won't buy a lesser quality wine just because it saves me a few pounds. However, I couldn't care less about tinned tomatoes and by switching from 50p a tin to 14p a tin, I have saved quite a lot of money.
Anyway - best of luck!r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
Oh heck!!!!
Apologies to Julie, i have just deleted your last post by mistake.Sorry, i meant to quote it, but i think my words edited yours.

R. Mac - Have you thought about buying wine buy the box, or the case? I did see some offers on the grabbit board a while ago for Virgin Wine, not sure if they'd work out cheaper or not but it might be worth a look. Or try Macro or the others, they sometimes have offers on cases. When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -

Don't worry mistakes happen
In brief I said, I need to get more organised and shop in more than one shop, try own brand products and make a real effort instead of just hoping that I spend less.
Thanks to every one for the help and advise I have taken note of all advise
thanks again0
