You can get 'boiler replacement' ASHP that are self contained, sit outside and only require the feed and return plumbed onto them. They also require an electrical connection which would need to comply with Part P building regs (as does any electrical work).
It makes sense to consider whether any other improvements can be made to your existing system/house to make most efficient use of energy. Always insulate first as it'll give the best return.
Some people also use 'Thermal Stores' which they heat with ASHP during off peak hours of Economy 7. You need to understand your usage and do the sums to see if this works for you.
You can use existing radiators with ASHP but it works better with things like underfloor heating. A compromise can be made by using oversize radiators. It all depends on what you've already gor in place, your usage, and how much you can spend!
Not recommending this particular supplier or make or, model but the following link gives you some idea of whats available. the site has links to technical info etc.

There are some grants available, but some have found worth little in reality, worth checking out though.0 -
OK ... so how much was this ASHP ... I know a little about them ... is it using wet central heating ... and if so, did you have to modify the rads etc.
If it's expensive, then it's not much of an option ... if not then it may be a go-er'!
Ta!
cjbananas, I sold my WB greenstar oil boiler and tank only 2 yrs old £1200, remaing oil £200, plus the £700 I had saved to fill up for the winter. bought the ASHP for £2600 plus £250 to the Acredited heating engineer to fit the system, I run it with UFH 2 floors at 40 degrees, works fine, hot water heated to 55 degrees into 210 L tank and lifted 10 degrees to 65 by Imm Htr once a day, this is the 8.5 kW unit and would do radiators to 55 degrees, which if the house is well insulated, Double glazed, draft proofed etc i.e. low heat loss then its ideal, generally, radiators are often oversized anyway, but you should calculate heat loss, U values, watts/M"2/degress K, my OP for winter bill is genuine as I take meter readings and monitor regularly. by the way, even at minus 8 here was still churning out the heat. There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't!

Air Source Heat Pump.
You put one unit of electricity into them and get somewhere between 2 and 4 units worth of heat out of them.
They're not ideal for every situation but are fantastic for some.0 -
