You will always get a FWD car further ups a hill in reverse than you will going forward.

Depends which way the vehicle is facing!

Because RWD cars dont have the weight of the engine over the driven wheels.

Years and years ago, my dad used to drive a Fiat 126 (rear engine, RWD). He and my mum lived in an estate at the bottom of a steep hill and when it snowed, nobody could get their cars up the hill for days on end.

My dad worked out that if you put a concrete breeze block in the boot (at the front) of his 126, there was no hill he couldn't get that little car to climb. He's still smug about it all these years later :rotfl:

We bought daughter 1 a 126 as a 1st car, insurance and all that. There were some local hills it couldn't get up even mid summer;);)

We used to put blocks in the boot to stop us slipping on the hill to my parents- worked every time.

That would be when it wasn't broken down.;)

BTW, I'm glad you are OK.;)
  • At least you are reversing onto your drive Bri, I practicly saved your life ;).

Sometimes reversing up the hill with a fwd is better but sometimes I find having a few gears to chose from going forwards works better, depends on the situation.
I've done some interesting turning the road today though, put it in reverse and the rear wheels don't move but the front end slides around up to 180 degrees and I'm facing the way I want without even doing a handbrake turn.

Went out the day after I mentioned and got stuck on a steep narrow lane, did exactly the same but I find it works best in 1st, gets you round quicker;);). Even more interesting when it's too narrow for a 3 or 33 point turn and a ditch one side and hedge the other:eek:.

No fun today, we had a genuine 15" of snow here last night, never seen that since the early 80's. Nothing but nothing has shifted
