snow warning

Just a word of warning for anyone in a similar situation as me. I've been driving bikes and cars for over 40 years now, so remember when we used to have "real" snow.;). I don't have any fears or issues with driving in reasonable snow levels but at the weekend I was nearly caught out.

I live on a steepish hill and my drive is even steeper off it. Getting off is no problem but I have to turn down the hill regardless of which way I want to go.
Anyway we had 5" of snow overnight on Friday. I had to go out at 7.30 am so didn't bother clearing the drive, just rolled of and down the hill, turned round and drove back up the hill past home.

I came back about 4 hrs later when the roads were much improved, the snow was still the same on the drive.
I figured, as I have done many times before that the best way of getting up the drive with a fwd car was to reverse up so I put the car broadside accross the road and gave it enough to push the car 1/2 way up the drive before the wheel slipped, well clear of the road. Banged the footbrake on, put it in 1st and pulled the handbrake on as far as possible. Turned off engine, all well so I got out of car. Big mistake.
Went to the boot as I keep a couple of wheel chocks in my winter kit. But when I slammed the tailgate the car decided it didn't like the incline after all and slid bodily 5yds off the drive and spun around on the hill with me desparately trying to pull the rear bumper off :o

Ok no damage done but if I had driven forwards onto the drive I would have been behing the car trying to get out of it's way, or into the boot :eek:

Just reminded me of that thread a few weeks ago when someone was killed by their own car:(, take care
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Least you're all right. My parents drive is 1/8 mile long, and a very steep incline- my Dad used to teach us how to react on ice on it. Very treacherous on a cold day!

Reversing up a snowy hill in a FWD car is not the best of ideas. Why do you think RWD cars struggle driving forwards in the snow!

Because RWD cars dont have the weight of the engine over the driven wheels.

And half the people who drive them don't know what they are doing.

And the other half are using wide low profile tyres. Watch the WRC rallying in Sweden and you'll notice they have tyres narrower than fitted to a Citroen 2CV.

You will always get a FWD car further ups a hill in reverse than you will going forward.

I think the lesson here is to keep the chocks in the front of the car in future and make sure they have spikes to dig into the snow/ice if pushed.
