Stove advice; vertical rise of 600mm before a change in direction

Is the recommended 600mm rise before a change in direction of the flue really necessary?
I have been given a stove (lovely red enamelled thing, i was only going to use it occasionally) and was hoping to fit in on my hearth, free standing, with the flue going straight out the back, then about a metre into the old fire place, to a right angle, then up the chimney. Will my stove work if i do this? Or am i going to have to alter my entire fireplace??
Thanks!

Try asking on the hearth room forum at hearth.com: http://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php/forums/viewcategory/1/0

It is simply a recommendation and very rarely possible to use a 600mm straight from the top of the stove.
We install plenty of stoves with bend from the top of the stove......there is no other option most of the time and i'm absolutely sure that 2 x 45 or 30 degree bends on the top of the stove will give better flow of gases than using the 90 degree rear outlet. Also what about wood fired cookers where the flue gases travel under the hot plates, accross the top of the oven, down the right hand side of the oven, then underneath the oven before finally travelling upwards again and into the flue pipe.
It should work fine providing your flue is in good condition.
Hearth.com is in the USA by the way so not so great when discussing requirements or building regs.0 -
Thanks, i have no alternative but to flue from the rear of the stove. But by the sounds of it it should work anyway, many thanks

My experiance of that type of stove is that the more of the flue pipe that is in the room, the more heat you get from it.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

Thanks, i will sit the stove as far into the room as possible, whilst still on the hearth0

You cant have a stove pipe at a right angle. You would need to fit a tee piece. You also need a minimum of 12" of hearth in front of the stove.0

Know nowt about pipes but you need the clearance in front of the stove for those pesky spitting embers and coals. Ours it just that - and we have had embers land on the carpet so the bigger the space the better0 -

Building regs require a hearth of 225 mm minmum for a closed appliance 300 for an open fire in front of your stove. 300mm mininum would be better as ash /debris falling from the stove door when opened could fall onto your rug/flooring.
Available here. (Page 38)

The regs will also explain flue pipes too.If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you! :dance:0
