    Thanks everyone
Took shocking pinks advice and stayed in a nice b&b that had just been upgraded in the south lakes region
Walked for 10 mile in grizedale forest, then visited Hawkshead and bought some pickles then visited Conniston water on the first day (latter 2 as recommended by murphythecat. Today we did Tarn Hows (but got lost - parked in the wrong carpark and ended up doing an extra hours forest walk!!!!) The Tarn is gorgeous - even in the pouring rain - we then drove to Ambleside, Bowness and ended up at the Mason's Arms - small, busy (full of small people as it's half term) but gorgeous food and great bar staff. Then we drove home and got stuck in the queue on the M6 - C'est la vie - all that pleasure obviously deserved some pain!!!!
    Thanks again everyone

Yep glad you had a good time - sounds like you took in quite a few of the sights.

Ive heard of quite a few people going to the Masons Arms and its really good food and atmosphere apparently.

Hi, just got back from the Lakes last night. Ashamed to say we only 'discovered' the Lakes three years ago but this was our fourth visit in that time, staying at the same place each time. We stay in a little village called Portinscale, just outside of Keswick in the Derwentwater Hotel. It's a bit pricey but they also do self-catering accommodation which is luxurious. Two nights self-catering will cost about £120. It has the added bonus that you can use all the hotel facilities and if you don't want to cook you can order a meal across at the hotel and they will deliver it to your accommodation when you want to eat. They do a very nice afternoon tea in the conservatory. They do 'short breaks' as well so don't worry about having to book for a week. The walk into Keswick takes about 20 mins and there are plenty of walks which start off at Moot Hall in the centre, so you can park you car at the hotel and you don't need to use it again until you come home.

You'll love the Lake District, great scenery and lovely people.

Oops! Just read the date you posted. Hope you had a great holiday. Nice there ennit?
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
