Pippi, your bill is in budget, but I can understand your horror at seeing the figure, it *is* big.... I'm paying £60 a month currently.
... both your co-ops and the Hebrides ones are under strict instructions to sell as much as they can to avoid having to ship it back. Apparently there are specific stock groups set up for the Island stores too as they have some lines which other stores don't stock!
At least the islands have *one* advantage price-wise!

...Remember also it makes more sense to have your oven on for longer, than heating it twice for the same amount of cooking so think about having cooking afternoons when you do loads and loads.
Oh, I like this tip - I've been thinking about batch cooking because I have a range cooker - and I live alone! - its a huge oven for one person, but cooking *lots* at once and then doing it again - excellent idea.

Pop excess water boiled in the kettle into a thermos flask, then pour back into the kettle next time you boil it - saves time and money on boiling.
This is the first time I've read that tip and thought I might actually do that - even tho I try to heat just one cup, there's often a bit left over, and I do have a teeny little thermos flask that would hold it.

Not sure if it is too cold where you are but I found I could get enough hot water for a full bath by having the water on for only an hour at night.

Me too - again, being single, its very easy to control.
I'm with you on the needing to get back to batch cooking - although I also need to work on getting some room in the freezer first to put back the stuff I've cooked! :rotfl:

Ooh yes, I forgot about that.

This is great stuff - thanks EH!

Pippi - I see from the post you've just made that you're snowed in again :( life is tough where you are! I've got the heating at frost-free, sort of, down at 5 degrees, and I'm only just starting to feel the chill on my feet now - and I've been up since 6.30. There are draughts in this house, but in the main its really warm - I noticed when the snow was here that when it had disappeared from my neighbours' roofs, I still had it, and my heating was on constantly and I was warm - my roof insulation is really paying off :j

Sorry for the humongous post :o

EDIT - dishywishy! I love that! I seriously love my dishwasher, do you mind if I adopt this name, Pippi :)

sorry to hear you are snowed in again. your electric bill is about what mine is, but we pay monthly so our last one was $166 so £83. But that is with no heating on. in the summer it can get as bad as $400 a month! gulp. so i feel your pain

    Morning all
It's snowing in a fairly 'determined ' manner at the mo. Not snowed in just annoying, so far:eek:.I think I thought that last time too
Pippi , you are right about planting opportunities. I hate to lose plants, but, after 26 years and not having the heart to get rid of things it would be nice to make some changes.
One thing that has been brilliant is one of those Cornus (Dogwood) things, I think it's called something like 'midwinter beauty' and it's an amazing coral colour and probably more importantly, not dead:).
I've also got some little crocus starting to poke through. It may only be January but just these little changes can lift your spirits can't they.
It's strange with the Physio's chickens. I've been going since June and at first it was the usual unpleasant stretching and all that for my hip. Just as I was about to be signed off I damaged my Achilles tendon so now I just lie there and get ultrasounded so we end up talking about allsorts including her chickens and bees. When and if this ever improves I'll miss the updates on her veg and Livestock.
Hope everyone is warm and well
  • Hey there - wonderful to hear about the dog wood - nice you've met someone lovely - maybe there will be a way to catch up on her news after the phsio finishes? Does she sell any of her eggs and you could keep up that way?

    I'm keeping warm :)

Just had a peek at Cheery's holiday blog - wonderful photos!

Aargh to more snow - hope it eases soon. I noticed from FB this morning that quite a bit of the country seems to have more of it today. None here yet - it's just been raining all day so far. :( Was colder than I expected when I went out this morning though which means the Met Office app for the iPhone was wrong yet AGAIN! If they don't start getting their act together I'll go back to Accuweather!

Either PM me on here or message via FB Pips with your address and I will pop those seeds in the post to you. :D
