Hi Pippi,
Just dropping in to say hello and I thought of you in a lecture today - one of my lecturers started talking about short rotation coppice as a biofuel source... how is the work going btw? Or is it better not to ask?!“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.”

Well my free potatoes from T&M arrived and I excitedly opened them up to discover packets of seeds in there!!! coriander, basil, carrots, cabbage, erm and one other that I cant remember at the moment. Anyways, I have followed the instructions and stood the potatoes into egg cartons with the rose bit at the top. Er daft question......... how long should they stay there and when will I know it is time to plant them. The instructions are a bit erm............ confusing for a complete novice.
Also if I can kindly pick your brains (or anybody else who might know). I have a photina red robin (kind of bay tree style) outside of my front door in a lovely big square pot. It is looking a bit leggy but I dont think it is the right time to prune (not that I know when the right time is otherwise I would have done it) am I right? If so when is the right time. If I can prune it now how much should I prune it?

I think you're supposed to prune it NOW. Quick, get out there. If you do that it should have lots of new, red growth this season.
em........ Fay, is that rightA positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Morning,
not sure what its like in your part of the world, windy?? but its looking OK here.
I loved the plant and weed descriptions - variegated thingy, weed thingy. I have a huge 'thing' in my yard, which is going to have to go. My sister is horrified as its a buddleia (?) but my poor yard is only 6ft x 20ft and this thing is growing out of the wall and sticks out 4 ft! I have lots of a very pretty weed though, big purple flowers, helping to prop my wall up.
My chives, parsley and mint all survived the winter outside, can't wait to move my seeds into the little greenhouse.

Leaving potato to hatch um, dunno how to tell you :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
You wait until you've a few bud on them and then pop them in
How to chit.......and chat!- Chitting means kindly asking your seed potatoes to sprout before planting.
- Start chitting (and chatting to them) about two-six weeks before you intend to plant out the potatoes.
- Each seed potato has a more rounded, blunt end that has a number of 'eyes'. (they don't look at you they are just buds!!!!)
- Stand the tubers with the blunt end uppermost in trays or old egg boxes, with plenty of natural light don't give them a lamp - they don't like reading - on a nice coolish windowsill or in a shed. They don't need blankets or a heater - they'll get too soft and not want to live outside
- The potatoes are ready to be planted out when the shoots are 1.5-2.5cm (0.5-1in) long.
- There is an argument that you rub off any more than three shoots but I cant bear to kill them so I just go with the flow.

Its a tad windy here yes - I couldnt (i dont joke) stand up without really making an effort yesterday and walking was a challenge unless I wanted to walk at a 45 degree angle! Guting at about 30 mph today and its brrish - but better than yesterday and itsa balmy (get yer bikini out) 13 degrees.
