I think I live near you in E Yorks and it has been chaotic driving about. I was going to Hull on Thursday when the snow was not too bad and there were a few cars in ditches. I have just been out and the road is a skating rink

Indeed you are in the same area. Didn't think it was that bad TBH. I've gone to work in far far worse than the light dusting we currently have. Went to work at Holme on Spalding Moor one Boxing day in the mid 90's. Pulling up the hill out of Middleton on the Wolds, snow was level with the floor of the car. Kept on going til I got to the left bend with the layby on where the dip is (past where that horse race is) and stopped by a Yorkshire Water landrover. Apparently it was 6ft deep at the bottom of the dip. Thats proper snow.

One good thing there used to be about working nights was being able to drive from York back to Driff at 4am through the snow without having to worry about being stopped due to the moron brigade.

I'm supposed to be travelling to Bolton on Monday to go get some more stock. I'm not going to bother because I can't be doing with having my journey extended by 2hrs from muppets unfit to hold a licence and panicking about the snow thats not even on the cleared road they're driving on.

I was shocked to see how close people were driving together with no braking distance.

Apparently Scarborough is almost clear of snow, on my road it is icy compacted snow and some idiots have nicked all of the grit to take with them on their journeys

It said on the news that the cause of the problems on the M4 was a white out at rush hour.

Have you ever driven in a white out? I have. I drove from Perth to Aviemore and during the white out I slowed and kept the steering wheel point at what I thought was straight ahead. When the white out passed I was actually 90 degrees across the road. And I filled my pants when I saw an oncoming HGV.:eek: I imagine the HGV driver filled his pants too seeing me across the road.:eek::eek: :D

I'd only believe it if I saw it, I am in the area of J34 all day and I didn't see any white out conditions.

Same applies to those that have ABS, TC, ESP, etc.
They seem to think that having a plethora of electronics means they will stop from 70mph while only 6' off the backside of the car in front rather than treating the electronics for what they are - a SECONDARY safety device.
ABS + snow seems to be a recipe for disaster IMO. Gone from a non-ABS to an ABS car and I hate it in the snow, I wish there was a disable button for it.

Problems seem to occur because people go too slow when they see a tiny bit of snow, the inside lane does 20, the outside lane does 40, people are desperate to change to the outside lane and force you to slow down to allow a suitable stopping distance.

I agree about ABS, very disconcerting when your foot pressure turns into jelly. I would like an on/off button too.

I think I will go to an empty car park tomorrow and try out ABS breaking with different methods, i.e. adding in greater pressure when it turns to jelly, see what happens.

What I do at the moment is to break gently from a greater distance, thus the ABS is not triggered. But I agree ABS in this weather does seem to make it more dangerous.
  • The abs is on a relay on my car, easy to remove for times like this so a switch could be fitted too.

Turning off the ABS braking system is usually pretty easy to do by pulling the appropriate fuse.

Don't forget to tell your insurance company and put the the fuse back before the MoT test.
