No hot water or heating- IT'S SNOWING!!!

I had a broken boiler two weeks ago. I phoned the landlord and the plumber came round and confirmed it was knackered. My landlord couldn't apologise enough, the boiler was old and it was only a matter of time until it totally failed. ordered a new boiler and it was installed a week later. I had no hot water or central heating while it was broken. I had to boil the kettle for hot water and had thermals, lots of layers, hot water bottle and heater in the meantime to try and keep me warm.
My point I suppose is good landlords know their responsibilities and get any work done that needs doing without the 'its not my problem' line. Even when I had a problem with the new boiler - my fault I wasn't used to it being so effiecient! - my landlord called the plumber and he was round the same day to sort it out.
Your landlord sounds like she's happy to take the rent money but not prepared to pay out for any work that needs doing. It doesn't look good for any future issues you have if she can't/won't sort out this one.0 -
I have already said this more then once but I guess some people are just not reading the whole thing.
I NEVER EVER said the OP should be without heat, I NEVER EVER said the landlord was right...ALL I said was that the op and her family are hardly going to freeze to death as was suggested and that it was being blown somewhat out of proportion.
This has nothing to do with a hotel or paying for hot water as I am guessing whilst it is not working they will not be using the electric/ gas to heat the house and most rent does not included the water/ gas / electric bills etc This was about someone asking for advice about getting their landlord to fix something and it turned into a " death by winter" thing which just seemed to me a touch to much..Really wish I hadn't bothered now.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

Thanks for the post. It's nice to hear that sometimes LLs and tenants are not tearing into each other!0 -
My boiler developed a problem last winter....right in the middle of the coldest cold snap - we also lost hot water and heating.
As a housing association tenant, they treated it as an emergency repair and came out the same day, unfortunately, the boiler could not be fixed quite as fast due to fixing the part that was broken only for that new part to cause another part to break! In the end, we had virtually every part replaced in the boiler and the man who can joked it would have been quicker (and probably cheaper) to have just replaced the thing first off...but they didn't know that at the time.
All told, we were without heating and hot water for 10 days (the fixer bloke was here everyday though from 9 in the morning until school pick up run time) but we survived with the assistance of a borrowed halogen and oil filled radiator from my parents (they are still here!) and boiling lots of saucepans and kettles of hot water for a bath...or just visiting the parents to use their facilities.
Re renting in the private sector, I remember my old flat back in the late 80's...no central heating and ice on the inside of the windows in the winter, it wasn't very sexy going to bed wearing a nightie, wooly tights, jumper, gloves, 2 pairs of socks and a wooly hat!We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

they were - they also had fireplaces, though....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
i also currently have no heating or hot water and haven't since friday! my landlord is trying to get an emergency plumber out but its a weekend and there is snow!! however after almost 24 hours with no heating they did go out and buy us two heaters and bring them round!!! they are not brilliant but better than nothing and my two mogs (who are indoor cats so a pair of wimps!) are certainly enjoying sunbathing in front of them!!!!Crafting for 2009 items doneOne patchwork blanket, two neck supports, one tea cosy, one knitted bunny, one knitted egg!0

Patronising muchly..
Was there really any need for that ?
I didn't agree with you and expressed a view point, people then choose to not read what I had written so I made my point clear..Hardly stressed
I think maybe you should take your own advice about the tea as that might help you not to blow things out of all proportion.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
