Hi,
We run a small friendly business based in Lancashire selling made to measure and standard sized kitchen & bedroom carcasses including kitchen and bedroom doors. Mainly to builders and joiners. Hope that maybe  of interest. http://www.basicallydoors.co.uk0 -

if you want 1-2-1 communication with the guy doing the work, then pic the little guy, and ask for photographs of previous work etc, as most carry a portfolio..

I know this is an old old topic, but since someone else bumped it
Just thought I'd add a voice of caution with the above advice. We bought our own kitchen then arranged a seperate fitter. He had the photos and recomendations (we checked them) and everything was going well for the first few days as he ripped out the kitchen, built up the units etc. Then he got flu. so for 2 weeks we had our 2nd bedroom full of built units, a bare kitchen (no drinking water coz it was off) and hardly a word from the guy since he was ill.
We still prefer to use 'the local little business' where we can but we are now extra cautious because they just have no cover. When he eventually finished the job the quality was great. But what was meant to be a 10 day job - 2 weeks max - turned into 6 weeks before the final trim was on. And he even started doing the next jobs (which had falled behind) before completing our fitting!!! which I found particularly appalling.
The final rub was when it came to pay up time. For all the inconvenience he gave us £70 off his £1500 fitting charge, and we had to ask for that even. We pushed a little but didnt want to make a big scene, because after all he is a little trader which we like to support and his work was good, it was just the severe inconvenience. If it was a big company had done this we could have pushed alot more I expect. Although hopefully it'd not have come to the same time!!!0
