Hubby fitted our kitchen. He is a self-employed plasterer, and set himself up an account at Howdens so he could buy the units. He was given two brochures. A plain one for himself and a glossy one to show to 'customers' The one showing the prices that he would pay was 60% less than the one to show to 'customers'. For example, a unit costing £100 in the glossy brochure, only cost us £40. So if you order your units from a glossy brochure your kitchen fitter shows you, he is making a nice little profit on the units before he even charges you for fitting.
Hi i have been a kitchen fitter for 10 years i have used Howdens for about 4 years i have never seen a glossy brochure for customers and a pain one for myself i have been given only 1 type of brochure this i use for myself and customers, the only other brochure they do is a price list with trade written on the front this is not a brochure it is a price guide, and in this there is usually 50% 0ff the reccomended retail price if you order a kitchen from Howdens you will normally find on your run down that there is usually 60 to 70% off . All my customers who have had a kitchen from me also get this discount because we are not all interested in making loads more money from people it is the fitting side that i am interested in and make my money from this.0 -
What a maze it is ,I have a few quotes ,vast variations, hard to differentiate between quality and fitting,it is a whole complex subject,B+Q OR MOBEN,is their that much differeence in quality to justify such a difference in price.Help
HI the key to a successful kitchen is getting the right fitter you can have the best kitchen in the world get it fitted by amateurs and it will look worse than a flat pack fitted by a professional.I have been fitting kitchens for 10 years and i pull my hair out at some of the jobs that i have had to rectify for peole who try to save on the fit.You have spent time and money choosing your kitchen my advice is to get it proffesionally installed.0 -
I know what you mean!
We've just had a couple of quotes for a new kitchen. I can't believe the fitting charge - £1175 for the 1st & £428 for 'dry fitting' + £600 for plumbing & electrics for the 2nd. I'm looking for an integrated dishwasher, (they quoted £500 minimum), would appreciate some advice as I've never had a dishwasher - only hubby!! What should I be looking for?
HI there fitting a kitchen professionally is a bigger job than you would imagine the quotes that you have had i would say are about average for an average size kitchen, but pick the fitter who can do professional butt/scribe joints on worktops and professional mitred cornice/ light pelmets because there is nothing worse than having filler in these.0 -
Hey Kitchens,
You are answering posts that are over 2 years old.
BTW I am getting a new kitchen but I decided to go for quality and went for a simple kitchen from a local kitchen design studio (genuine interest, no sales pressure, lots of tips) as I did not like the sales tactics from Moben, Magnet, (You can get a 50% discount but only if you sign now, you cannot get the discount tomorrow  , bla bla bla, and they would not leave until it dawned on then that we will not sign on the dotted line as we started fixing dinner and pretended the sales person was not there :rotfl: , (we can play hardball too) and guess what? their prices are still the same  as from the design shop I am going with) MFI and B&Q were useless and had no flexibility plus they all have the same stuff.0 -
Any idea how I can find a kitchen fitter in South East London who is registered with Howdens?0
-
Just check the yellow pages and give them all a call and ask. I am sure if they are professional fitters they would have an account.0

Just to let you know that the parent company of Moben called MKD Holdings has been in administration since the end of May 2007 - don't touch with a bargepole. Lots of people who have taken them to court over badly fitted kitchens etc probably wont see their money again or any replacements. The new owners have resurrected the Moben name. I wonder who the new owner really is???! If you do a search on the Times website business section, the story is on there.0
