But if you look at the bigger picture, if 10000 people took up on that offer, how much profit will tesco make? So, it is not just about the 29 p.

You tell me. I highly doubt they make 29p profit from each bag.

Contact Tesco if you wish to complain. Maybe it was just a simple mistake.
I try to help as much as I can. But I'm also honest and speak my mind.

And it's 29p for crying out loud. You can get **** all for that now

You can get a 1kg bag of salt in Tesco for 23p

Then 10000 people would have each gotten 3kg of salt at a price they were happy to pay.

If you put a line of salt in front of your outside door the slugs won't cross it to get in.

It is not just mistakes and crafty marketing - it can also just be an unpopular size that is more expensive to stock. Plenty of people want to buy a 250g or 500g bag of salt. Many want a 1kg bag of salt. Very few sales will be made of a 3kg bag. If they sell hundreds of times fewer bags then the higher pro rata cost is justified.

Not that I'm denying it's ruddy annoying.

(And, of course, if they stick it in the toiletries section and colour it grey they can charge orders of magnitude more extra than 29p!)

They gotta do things like that though, it's part of how they make money and if they didn't make money they wouldn't be a successful business. I'm not saying you're not right to be annoyed, but it wont ever change.
I always check the small print on the price labels on the shelf, it always says how many pence it is per 100g or something like that- that way you can tell how cheap it really is.
As Martin Lewis says, shops/businesses are NOT our friends, as much as theyd like us to think so.

EDIT: I just saw a really interesting thing about s/markets mislabelling things on BBC News Channel- there was a label for a pasta sauce for £1 or 2 for £3.00 and apparently Trading Standards are even looking into it!
  • It's not a con.....all it takes is the consumer to check that the multi-pack is cheaper than the same number of single items.

This happens very often so I always check the prices before putting it in my trolley.

As other people have said, I don't see how this is a "con". If the 3Kg bag was more expensive in the past then now it IS on offer!

Does anyone else remember the thing a little while back about BOGOF / BTGOF offers being a "con" because people were tempted into buying more food than they actually wanted or needed ... hence binning the extra stuff they'd in the end be forking out for! :D

It's not a con. It's a consumer survey device to see how many folk that go into Tesco are (a) intelligent enough to go and check the unit price and (b) can do simple arithmetic. They have to keep an eye open for any signs that their customers might be wising up to their creative marketing techniques after all. Or indeed growing a few extra brain cells.
