could you give more details regarding the error msg?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Hi,just put the computer on and this is it what it says.
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
    <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

    Thanks.
  • hi easytiger66

Does the system have a floppy drive. If so you can do it the go old way of DOS. I will post how to do this later, am in class atm. lol

EDIT: Message me and I will send you the hal.dll file.
  • “COPY A:\hal.dll C:\system32\hal.dll”

Is the DOS command you want if you have a floppy drive. The command copies the file from the floppy disk and then puts the file in the system32 folder.

    Hope this helps you.
  • Thanks. It does have a floppy drive. But as i am not techie minded i will do as you say when my husband gets home. Fingers crossed it will work.:)
  • Do you need the hal.dllfile?
  • You'll need to boot from a windows Cd and go into recovery console first, suggest you then run chkdsk c: /F/R
    to fix any disk corruption.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • I have no windows xp cd. She should have made a back up but didn't. I was hoping there was another way other than buying one. Thanks.

Hi, you dont get recovery CD's, its all on the hard drive. Im sure from my old PC world days, this is how its done....

With a HP you turn your computer on and every few seconds i think you press F10 key which should load the HP recovery program. There will be a couple of options - usually 1 to completely trash everything and start again, and 2 to check the disk for errors and repairs the faulty files.

Id try the latter first, if it doesnt work, youll have to choose the full factory default option, which resets everything to as it was when you first bought it.

If the above doesn't work, you can always download a copy of Win Xp from the net... many torrent sites will have this.

As long as you use the Win Xp serial number that came with the machine (often a little sticker on the back somewhere) when youre installing the software, youre doing nothing naughty :)
