Better than a car mounting the pavement because some idiot wanted to do his bit of drive & path.

As opposed to some free rock salt from a road bin for my drive you mean?

    Good idea.

    You must try it.

Because you pay council tax you do not automatically have an inherent right to help yourself to public facilities.

We all slate those who falsely use disabled parking bays or who apply for disabled badges spuriously, so why should those who help themselves to grit be any different.

You know you don't have to use grit/salt to make things safe, you could just go out and shovel it away before it freezes or heaven forbid put your hand in your pocket and buy some if you can't be bothered to manually labour.

    Sheesh...

If you help yourself you are no better than a common thief

I bet he thinks of it as a Council Tax Rebate :rotfl:

Probably claimed for damage to his wall after last winter 3 cars ended up buried in it & some hooligan put some elderly people in hospital when he was driving 15 mph & mounted the kerb. ;)

You do know, if you put your own stuff on public paths/ roads if there is an accident you are liable not the council.

IIRC that's been debunked, as long as you're reasonably careful/sensible about how you clear your path, you're no more liable than if you don't.

We normally try to keep salt in stock in our house (we had a bag sat by the shed for about 4 years), as my mother requires a wheelchair or electric scooter to get around and so de-icing the back path is a must.

This year we picked up a bag at Homebase (they were charging about £12 a bag a couple of weeks ago:eek: ), and today we picked up two more from B&Q to let us grit the drive as well if need be.

I think B&Q were also doing snow shovels cheaper than Homebase (who were charging £12 or £15 - iirc we got ours a few years back for under a fiver*, and it's been living at the back of the shed, next to the chainsaw and mattock).

Re the using the grit on your pavement, from memory round here the council were saying it was ok to use the grit from the public bins for the elderly and disabled (from memory), not that we've got many such bins, I can only remember the locations of two or three.

*I think that's the price my local tool stool sells them for.

Rock salt used to melt ice in the winter contains sodium and potassium chloride, which burns the feet of cats and dogs.
It can also be harmful to an animal if ingested, as the natural instinct of animals to lick salt off their feet.
We put sand down which works just as well.
