I live in Devon, and it is quite beautiful, with coast, moor etc. Good schools, lovely villages and every other person has moved there for a better life away from the hustle and bustle of the south, ie mainly London.

I would move to Ireland. I bet there are some bargain properties over there at the moment ;)

Lovely countryside.....a bit damp for sure, and not ideal as someone who suffers with frizzy hair if it rains. But I would put up with this and invest in good straightners, as the people are the most fantastic, warm, community spirited people you could wish to meet.......or at least they were 3 years ago.....might have changed now :o

I can't believe the craic is still not there, as they had a joy and spirit about them I have never seen equal here with the British. I love the Irish.

Don't want to live in a city but want to be within easy commuting distance of a city with good transport links

SO the primary link will be bus or train to a location that OH can train or very close to a location he can train and links elsewhere.

Narrow it down with the training locations

When you say not in a city do you also include large towns?

Agree with getmore4less towns with train stations and direct links to possible working locations sounds the way to narrow down your search.

Would add to check the bus timetables, most buses are fine in the day which would enable you to shop and meet up with friends etc. But if the buses also run in the evenings then you & OH could enjoy a meal out without the expense of a taxi to & from home.

I think you would need to tell us what areas are available first?

I'd like to live outside of large towns/cities but close enough with good public transport links to get into a large town/city easily.

Hethmar: the area which is available all of England.

There are places to live that meet your requirements the length and breadth of the country
so I would base the decision on where the individual training venues are within each area.

If OH is going to have a hellish commute from the nice-village-just-outside-town to training location 1 and there isn't a nice village within easy commute in that area then its probably no good, no matter how well that village fits your other requirements. Similarly training location 2 might be in a region of England that you never considered but it is actually located in a nice village that is just outside a good town and has buses running 3 times an hour and so would suit you much more.

My goodness, what is he training ! Surely there must be some territorial areas involved? Distances he could travel? Places you favour due to family/interests/costs of housing/quality of living etc?

I love living here East O f England, we are 1 mile from the beach, 2 miles from minsmere the RSPB , beaches all along the coast line for lovely walks and fresh air.....:D

Things have changed in the country now as theres so many super markets popped up everywhere, so you dont have to travel too far.......we are 1 mile from a town which sells everything etc etc...yet in the countryside peace and quiet, but like others posts say it depends what you are looking for .........the above doesnt suit everyone does it.? ........

My son and GF have a 2 bed cabin in the woods, so peaceful . :Djust birds and animals for company, :Duhmm thats the ideal way to live.....:D

    It's separated into regions:
NW, NE, West Midlands, EM, Yorkshire & Humber, SW, SE, London (inner and outer), Wessex, East of England

EM, EofE and NW are going to be the first 3 choices as we live in EM and have family and friends in EofE and NW. I'm trying to put the regions in to order of where I'd like him to apply to on the basis of geography so we can then discuss the final order on the basis of the specifics of the programme in each regions as well as the geography :)
