Where to live - suggestions and comments

This is probably not the place to post so please delete if it's not appropriate.

My question is: If you could live anywhere in England where would it be and why?

Background: my OH is applying for a training post which is available across the country so he needs to list in order of preference where he'd like to go. We need good public transport links as I am unable to drive and my OH prefers to travel by train and bicycle rather than face rush hour traffic.

Thanks for your suggestions :)

How much money do you have to spend?

    And where are you now?

    :)

Where you wish to live depends on what is important to YOU.

I like living in a town but on the doorstep of the countryside. Would never live in the countryside again as I like being able to walk when I go out at night and being close to convenience like corner shops and pubs.

I would get you and OH to list your 5 top areas of the country followed by 5 most disliked areas of the country. Then add 5 things you want from a home and 5 things you want from an area.

You then need to cross check and see what it leaves you needing and then apply that to your search.

Are you going to be looking for work too? If so, what sort and how easy will that be to come by in the areas you are considering?

We've lived in Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Northamptonshire in the past and have family/friends around these places so the first three areas are going to be North West, East Midlands and East of England but after that we're not sure as we have no ties or knowledge of anywhere else, hence my question.

Don't want to live in a city but want to be within easy commuting distance of a city with good transport links. I'm unable to work due to illness but I want the option should I get better.

MLZ's idea is a good one but with no real knowledge of other areas, all we have is that we need good public transport links so I don't get stuck in a house in the middle of nowhere without any way to get out but don't want to live in the middle of a city (I love cities but my OH doesn't).

Central London for me. Everything on the doorstep and no worries about not being able to drive. But it's up to you whether you want to live in a town or in the country, or by the sea. Not everyone wants the same things.

We are friendly up here, we have everything on our doorstep, the pennines, the north yorkshire moors, the dales and the east yorkshire wolds. Plenty of history, plenty of shopping, beautiful rugged coastline, small towns and large cities.
Come up and see us, you may be surprised.
