JSA and Snow

I wonder if anyone can help me,

I have been out of work for several months without income and as of 1.5 weeks ago I finally gave in and made a claim for JSA. Tomorrow is my first day to sign on after my initial interview last week. Tonight we have had several inches of snowfall (increasing by the minute) and my car is failing to start. With 0 funds for a bus (My claim has not been finalized) and no car (it would take over 2 hours to walk) I cant make it to the Job Center tomorrow, is it likely my claim will be stopped?

I am completely new to this and already feeling ashamed that I am having to claim benefits in the first place, so please don't give me any 'benefit scrounger' talks.

I can't say whether your claim will be stopped, sorry I have no info on their rules.
Phone them first thing and explain your situation.
It's quite possible that some of their staff will not be able to get in to work either.
Alternatively, can a neighbour or friend give you a lift?

There is no shame in needing to claim benefits.

if you know it takes 2 hours to walk isn't it a sacrifice worth making?
knowing you will not have to worry about canncelling your claim..
if i had to walk 2 hours to do something and i knew it was helping me out i would not even be thinking twice about it!
just walk and then you know it is done and at the end of the day i could understand if this had to be done daily but every fortninght it's a no brainer......get your shoes on

I would advise go in even if it's a two hour walk to get there, just take no notice of those who condemn you and don't feel any shame in claiming the benefit you are entitled to.
  • You shouldn't feel ashamed about claiming JSA but, unless you're ill/disabled, you should walk in this morning to sign on.

I would ring them first thing, tell them you will be walking in due to the snow and you may be late in as you think it'll take you about 2hours - if the snow is that bad they may excuse you coming in and automatically process (I have known it happen with bad snow years ago) but if they don't offer to do that then I'd walk

Unless there is a health issue stopping the walk, I would advise walking...

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

Just consider that you are 'earning' the JSA.

So if it takes 2 hours to 'earn' a minimum of £130(for 2 weeks JSA) that is a pretty good hourly rate.

If you don't need the money then don't bother.

Phone them up and explain your problem and ask if you can sign by post. Make sure you do contact them before you are due to sign though, as if you miss you appointment then contact them after, your claim will bew stopped.
  • You should phone the Jobcentre and explain that you are running late.

They usually will tell you to come and sign on at 4pm if you are likely to miss your regular timeslot.
