"Just get a job" advice

  • I'm not sure where you got 2007-2010 from, I am talking about the last 10 years really.

And yes, it is some turnaround, which is exactly my point about how bad the job situation is!

The reason I got nearly all the roles I interviewed for was because I was quite selective about which interviews I chose - I did not go for all of them.

Depends on your sector as to how much competition there was previously but admin is pretty widespread so there are (or used to be) a lot more opportunities than in various other types of work.

I picked out 2007 as maybe the last year when employment was buoyant, unemployment started rising mid 2008 and 2010 is the opposite to what might have been the experience back in 2007.

There are jobs out there. I applied for a job last Tuesday, had the interview last Thursday and was offered the job 4 days later.

So there are jobs out there, you just need to be proactive.

Exactly what happened with me. Interviewed for a position 2 wks ago, got offered 3 different jobs in the same co, and started one today. Oh they're definitely out there :D:rotfl:

Well done on your new job. Though I think the smilie at the end is a bit patronising to people who cannot find a job- me included. Yes I am well aware there are jobs out there I apply for plenty (and all sorts) but on the rare occassion I get an interview there is always somebody else beats me to the finish line.
"It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice." :T
  • I am bloomin happy I did such a great job at interview that I got the role! THAT'S why I'm smiling. If you read the rest of my posts on this thread you will see I am in no way patronising or looking down on anyone currently without a job. Until last week, I myself was also unemployed.

    No wonder with that attitude!

could I just ask what kind of places the job is advertised at (is it a general job site or an industry specific one) and if it's advertised as area specific?

It is advertised as London specific although that isn't the case.
It is advertised on totaljobs and also via a couple of University careers sites.

    Hope this helps.

why advertise it at London specific if it isn't then?

Obviously you are going to get fewer applicants that way than if you advertised it as being nation wide.

The particular site required an area to be given. In the job title it said clearly "home based".

Yes.. but there's also a lot losing all their worldly posessions, and funding isn't as easy to coem by as it used to be atm so I hear.

My brother has been jobsearching for a while - he's having a break now until after christmas (well unless something great comes up - and note he isn't on JSA before anyone moans) as he's just disheartened with it all.

He's been looking at apprenticeships too - but the other day he saw one for an NVQ 2 (I think that's the basic one is it? Whatever the basic is) that asked for a minimum of 2 years experience AND previous qualifications! I presume wanting someone experienced and only wanting to pay the £100 a week or so. He did actually apply anyway but not even a reply, not surprisingly.

RE: home based, not sure how many search for that as you seem to come up with mostly self employed things with "the potential to make minimum wage" - ie catologues and similar.

I'm getting really fed up of some people constantly answering "Just get a job" to any problem posed by an unemployed person.

UK unemployment is at 7.7% as of last Wednesday, that's nearly 2.5 million people out of work.

Can we please start to accept that maybe, just maybe, it isn't actually all that easy to get a job at the moment and there physically aren't enough out there for everyone who might want one to have one?

I should probably post this on the benefits forum actually...

Erm, do you even know what 'patronising' means?

    Trust me, you're it.

I'm sorry that I don't share your "everyone's against me" outlook. I'll leave you to gloat in the impossibility of it all.
