Boycott JAPAN, ICELAND, NORWAY

  • So presumably folks, you'll all be turning your gas off this Winter - as most of the UK's gas now comes from our friends in Norway.

I hope you don't like fish, as a lot of it comes from Iceland too.

I challenge anyone to stop buying Japanese goods - as nearly everything electrical contains Japanese circuitry.

Still, I can't say I'm pro-whaling. What's you view Liz on indigenous folks hunting whales (eg Aleutians, Inuits & Eskimos?

Whales are not fish, they are mammals, despite the line in 'It Ain't Necessarily So', namely

Mind you that song should be boycotted for crimes against rhyming.

I wonder how the song (I assume it is) would go if Jonah was Norwegian. ;)

But seriously, whales are animals, below humans on the food chain, hence I dont see why we shouldnt be allowed to eat them, provided we leave enough behind to keep the race going.. And as far as I know, the countries hunting whales have a set limit they can kill, set to leave enough behind...

    Your post is incomprehensible.

I am a foreigner myself and at no time have I suggested that anyone's opinions are devalued because of country of origin... unless they HAPPEN to come from the countries about which I'm complaining which, I believe, would be a reasonable matter to point out.

If it is true that 'people there may well be objecting to whaling', is that a reason for ME to sit on my hands and do nothing..?

Whatever 'pre-assumed' (an assumption is almost always 'pre'!) antagonism is, I have not been engaging in it. I have simply been pointing out:
That's odd, because I seem to be able to read above that some people have objected to being treated as though all people from Nordic countries supported this.

And you did make precisely this insult to people I have met
What exactly is your point..? That we should all go on tolerating each others' failings just because we daren't disturb 'friendships'..?
Just exactly what are the failings in these people are you talking about?

You have no information at all on their opinions, yet assume that they support this and overtly slag me off for complacently failing to confront them.

Make your campaign statements, but do not debase the level of debate to making distortive accusations and personal slurs against others.

Just in case anyone hadn't guessed it by now, I'm Norwegian, born and raised. Apparently that now makes me a bad person, and my opinions are devalued. There LizEstelle, I've pointed it out.

However, just because I'm Norwegian, do I go out and harpoon whales? No. Just because I'm Norwegian does not necessarily mean that I eat lutefisk and brew my own 96%, nor does it qualify me as a 6ft blue eyed blonde. May I point out that this comment that you have just made is actually racist? Saying that someone's opinions are devalued because they happen to come from a country about which you are complaining?

I could say something really fitting here, but I will not stoop to the OP's level, which I consider well below the one the OP has accused me of lowering myself to.

Over the thread I have become more and more disgusted by the OP's stance on this. I believe it is extremely racist and should have no place on this site.

It must be terrible to be Norweigian and having an automatic lust for whale-meat! Or to have a Scandinavian sounding name like jmarko!

If you are going to boycott Iceland for the resumption of whaling then you really should target their fishing industry, as this is the sector that will benefit most from whaling. I, therefore, suggest that you write to all organisations operating in the UK that import fish and ask them to stop sourcing fish from Icelandic waters. This would have a dramatic effect on the Icelandic fishing fleet and support industries because it would remove a large proportion of their income. You might want to suggest in your correspondence that they should be supporting the UK fishing fleet in the North Sea….

Oh, believe me, it's unbearable!:rotfl: But to be perfectly honest, I have never tried whale meat, and chances are I never will. I know they used to sell it in small quantities in the larger supermarkets in Oslo, but we never had it on our dinner table!

And as far as jmarko's name is concerned - if the OP knew a little bit more about Scandinavian culture, the OP would know that 'marko' doesn't even sound remotely Scandinavian. I am privileged to know the origin, but I don't feel the need to divulge this info. I remain satisfied knowing that I know the truth, and (by the sound of it) the OP does not.

Not really sure what we're getting on to, just wanted to point out that Iceland aren't all bad and their commitment to building an infrastructure based on clean power deserves praise.

Yes they're blessed with the raw materials to create this, but many countries have the option to invest more in natural power sources yet can't be bothered *cough* UK, USA *cough*

Think it's a bit more than not being bothered, it's about cost. If Green fuel sources were cheaper and more effiecent then they would get more money to be developed.

I don't want to pay more taxes so that someone in some developing country can continue to use fossil fuels to develop their country. Either everyone agrees or each to their own. Pointless in making your economy lose out to developing nations because you want to reduce pollution.

If the tree huggers would step back the UK could build the nuclear power plants it needs and reduce using fossil fuels anyway.

Just out of curiosity, how do you feel about waste-to-energy plants? I know they emit co2, but it would also reduce, if not eliminate, waste put in landfill - but still recycling that which can be recycled.
