Car INS Which One 3rd OR Comp for 1K & 2K car?

Options
I’ve always gone for fully comprehensive car insurance but now I’ve come to the point where fully comp is too expensive. I’m working on the basis that if I were to have a prang (hopefully never) the car wouldn’t be worth much anyway 1K for one of my cars and maybe 2k for the other. I’m thinking of down grading.

Any reasons why I shouldn’t down grade?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi mark101, I think it depends on whether you can afford to pay out for another car if (God forbid) you do have an accident and lose your car. Even if they aren't worth much at least you get an amount towards another car if you are fully comp??

Anyway I'm going to bump your post up in hope of more replies for you ;)

The cost differential isn't always particularly great.

Comprehensive includes windscreen cover; replacing a windscreen (say as an MOT failure) is quite expensive; windscreen claims don't affect your NCD.

But on the other hand ...

If you have TPFT you will be less likely to claim, so less likely to lose that NCD.

If you have legal protection cover (which I definitely would with TPFT) you should recover any losses from a third party if it's definitely their fault.

In summary, it's quite a difficult thing to assess which will depend on your individual circumstances and the quotes you can get for each type of cover!

We still have comp insurance on my wife's car - despite it being worth very little - because the premium is only £150 anyway so we clearly aren't going to save anything much by downgrading. And we HAVE had windscreen repairs done from time to time which would otherwise have cost a few £.

before you downgrade check elephant as they are cheap as. if that is no good then yes i would consider downgrading personally. if it has got to the stage where it is too expensive fully compe for cars that are not worth very much then it just doesnt justify it.

although as someone said, if you were too go out and write the car off, can you afford to purchase another 1 right out? if the answer is no then think very carefully. even though they wont pay out a lot of money, they will pay out some
