Why is sooo hard to find winter tyres

I bought snow tyres for my suzki carry van 3 years ago and still have to use autosocks, onto the 2nd wear today but still got stuck in the snow as the socks were worn out. AA said it would be 3 hours before they could come and if they couldnt they would get a garage to rescue me at my own cost. Phoned a couple of friends and they dug me out with the help of the socks.
So ive now just bought a set of snow chains ok ok I know I cant go on the tarmac with them but at least I shall feel safe in the side streets. The ones ive bought are klack and click easy to put on I think. The weather doesnt seem to be getting any better and the main roads are getting narrower and narrower with the snow piled up at each side of the road. If I dont go to work I dont get paid and a day or two is ok but longer than that means things dont go to plan financially and with the xmas/new year holidays coming up when folks take a couple of weeks holiday, I just cant afford not to work.:eek:Look after the pennys and the pounds will look after themselves:money:0 -

I live in newcastle so further north from there. But dont just rely on winter tyres, mine are pireeli snow sport tyres cost of £400 fitted and in the 3 years ive had them not impressed but saying that dont use my summer tyres in the winter so I suppose they would be worse. Its a many many years since ive seen snow like this here things are really getting very bad. Metro centre closes down early and it took my friend 4 hrs to get home from there last night, she had to go into work even for 1 hr to enable her to get paid for the 5 hrs she usually works. Buses where off and she couldnt get a taxi so had to walk!!!
Ok thanks -interesting - saw the Pickering to Whitby road has been closed past few days so guessed it was bad. Will take a view nearer time as obviously much of this bad weather may have gone by then, however Snowsocks may be worthwile investment if we do try to get there for last few miles off the A170 just in case. Have Googled the journey by road and certainly some hills on minor roads for last few miles of journey0 -
I had a bit of trouble sourcing them too - aparrently suppliers are seeing stock fly out at a usually unseen rate.
Kwik Fit had Continental WinterContacts in stock in 205/55/16 though, but I went for Bridgestone A001s from Farmer Autocare for slightly less.0 -
there aren't many winter tyres left in the UK - you can't really blame suppliers as they have to guess way in advance weather (see what I did there lol!) there's going to be bad weather. If not, they are stuck with loads of stock they can't sell.
just do what I do, buy a Quattro and drift it around everyone else stuck in the snow. Thinking about putting some semi slicks on to make things more interesting.0 -

He would probably spin at the thought of people buying 'winter'tyres full stop:DVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -
Kwikfit currently doing 25% of 4 fitted tyres (including winter tyres) I checked everywhere and this was the cheapist deal for my car.
worth a look http://www.kwik-fit.com/0 -
"Ohh, those brake discs look a bit worn and you're also low on headlight fluid. We can't let you drive away like this, the car's a death trap."
Not saying don't take advantage of this deal, just be careful and don't agree to any other work.0
