The illusion that 4x4 somehow improves braking and cornering is by no uncertain terms an accident waiting to happen. The manufacturer's are happy to exploit this though, as you'll notice by the increase in TV adverts for 4x4's this year.

The Banchory to Fettercairn road was being reported on the radio as 'only passable for 4x4s'. Now I'm sure they only wanted Defenders et al around but why not take the Fiat Panda 4x4 up or a useless 4x4 looking BMW X1 then (I'd pick the Panda between them!).

^^ I think when they say "only passable for 4x4's" what they're doing is also falling into the same illusion as everyone else (they are only people afterall). But it could just as easily be a statement designed to put across the seriousness of situation by appealing to the people who assume 4x4's are the answer.
However as you mention, if snooty cow in her X6 tries, she's bound to fail..... So I don't know how responsible it is to give out that sort of information on national radio :(

There are 300'477 pairs of shoes on Ebay, but only 49'769 that fit me ;)

Looked on ebay for winter tyre's some months back and couldn't find any of the correct size and in reasonable condition :(

You all missing the point with a 4x4.

Yes you may slide off the road and into the same ditch in the same spot as the 2WD car in front of you.
BUT you have more chance of getting back onto the road and doing the same on the next corner.

Read the brochures, Driving a big 4x4 will make you invincible, Especially if on the school run.

Buy an old land rover, Doesnt go fast enought to slide anywhere, You drive it less because its so heavy on the fuel silly posh 4x4's will envy you as you drive past wondering when the weather is going to get worse.

fwiw I read in a car mag article last week that an ordinary car fitted with winter tyres has more grip in cold conditions than a 4x4 fitted with normal tyres.

This is what the rest of Europe does. Go to France or Germany and people will drive around in the snow in their Golf's and 206's. I know some people who live up in the mountains in Germany, who deal with winters unimaginable in the UK yet not one of them needs of 4x4.

As for 4x4's I posted a youtube clip I'd seen during the snow last winter of a 4x4 (a real "let's off road" Defender) making a mess of driving down a road in the snow and ice.

Done a quick search and found the clip :D Fast Forward to 2:52 for the Defender clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FpQoAjM_M8

It's at this point that I own up to possessing a 4x4... an old Land Rover.

I'll agree on the fuel consumption (18-20mpg) but it is only any use if the snow is really bad. On slush, compacted snow or ice it behaves just like the Defender in the video above. To add a bit of interest it has no seat belts and the cabin is full of hard pointy things, so crashing it would be painful.

I'm considering getting a set of winter tyres for it though, as I have a spare set of wheels. On the other hand, I might just get the tyres for Mrs Gloom's hatchback... which has seat belts, airbags, a radio and, most importantly, a heater.
  • Can anyone suggest a brand of winter tyres suitable for a rear wheel drive Mazda MX5?

Never needed winter tyres until now. I only bought this car in August & didn't realise how difficult rear wheel drive cars are to drive in the snow.
