You put him on Winalot? YUCK!
Try NatureDiet. Can't fault it.
Yes I did.
I know its full of cr*p but I wanted to get the weight back on him fast because he had gotten horribly thin.I have realised I will never play the Dane!

Then why did you stick with the raw even if it made him horribly thin?
The winalot is useless, try the nature diet it's a lot better. Around 86p a carton from P@H I think but from other retailers you can bulk buy for cheaper.Wife and mother :jGrocery budget

Get off my case.
I stuck it out with the raw diet because its been shown to be healthier for dogs all round. It just so happened not to suit mine and when I realised he was losing weight on it I switched. I know Winalot isn;t any good which is why I posted on here asking advice on a decent quality wet food which wouldn't have the negative effects of Winalot and be good for him. I chose Winalot because he is incredibly fussy and he was fed that before I had him and I knew he would eat it. I have thrown away whole bags of decent quality food because he wouldn't touch it and the essence of feeding him Winalot short-term was he would eat it AND put weight back on.
I will try Nature Diet (in fact I am off to buy some now on the recommendations of people on here) but I don't expect to be judged as some poor owner because I fed him Winalot. If I didn't care do you think I would post?I have realised I will never play the Dane!

Not in the slightest. I think most people who come on here for advice sadly have come to expect being castigated by those with a holier-than-thou attitude.I have realised I will never play the Dane!

I have to agree to be honest. I hope my post didn't seem condescending in anyway. It wasn't intended to at all.
Raw is excellent if it suits your dog so I can see why you stuck with it for a while. I did too, despite it making your dog thin. It made one of my dogs totally hyper, to the point of being uncontrollable. The other dog did very well. The vet even commended how good he looked. But I couldn't afford to different diets so we went half half.
The wet foods I mentioned above are all decent. Wainwrights is usually on offer at pets at home 12 for £7.50 and I favour it over naturediet, whenever I've bought naturediet I've had at least 2 blown packs.Sigless0 -
Thanks for your post Rev and no you definitely didn't come across as condescending!
I posted originally as I really value the input of most people on here and I always feel as though I have lots to learn (and always will).
I do feel sometimes people get flamed on MSE by people (perhaps who are bored? I don't know) but who seem to be spoiling for a fight. Wainwrights I used to feed on the good advice of people on here but unfortunately Mr Fussy stopped eating itI am going to give Nature Diet a try and see if that tempts him! (For a doggy that will steal out of the bin if my back is turned, he sure is fussy when I've paid good money for dog food!)

Sounds really stupid, but have you thought he might be gluten intolerant? My mum's dog is the same, always itching and has scabs in her ears when she has gluten, but on food without it she is fine. She's also allowed antihistamines if it gets bad....My sister gave her sausage roll and she (the dog) felt bad for days, so mum gives her a rice and meat dry food and she gets scraps/leftovers so mum knows what she's being fed (although she will eat the crackling my dad won't eat)** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

Thanks Elfen. Well I had thought that because I am gluten intolerant too and get all itchy if I have wheat etc. But I hadn't applied that to Scraggy until a groomer said it was his food making him all itchy. So thats when I went onto Wainwrights then when he stopped eating that I tried raw. But nothing seemed to stop him itching and I think he is almost addicted to the biting etc (a bit like he is self-harming) he has always done this since I got him from the RSPCA. He was there for a year you see and developed this habit there and just seemed to carry on no matter what I have tried (diet, coco-nut oil, topical creams, pheremone collars, calming tablets, anti-histamines and goodness knows how many trips to the vets!)
The only thing that seemed to stop him scratching and biting was Dermacton spray and only then for a few hours until it was reapplied. I tried the soap AND the cream as the spray was so strong smelling it was unbearable and again its just a very short term fix. But I don't think gluten helps him at all although making sure he didnt have it didn't stop him biting his paws raw
