Leaving work - claiming JSA

I have looked on the official website but cannot find the answer. I gave my notice in to work yesterday and will work 1 months notice. How soon can I apply for JSA?

    Your benefits if you resign

If you have voluntarily quit without good reason, your Jobcentre Plus can delay your Jobseeker's Allowance. If you are claiming constructive dismissal, make sure they know. If you can't claim Jobseeker's Allowance, you may still be able to claim a hardship payment, which is a reduced amount of Jobseeker's Allowance.

You could end up being sanctioned for 26 weeks if you do not have a good reason as to why you left your job voluntarily.

  • Depends if you tell the jobcentre that you left out of choice, or if you just tell them that ''your work asked you to leave''.

Which, from the limited detail above, is not true - why are you encouraging someone to lie to get benefits.

It would help to know more information about why you left, but as mentioned above you may be sanctioned for 26 weeks.

You can claim from the day after you finish work (so if you gave 1 calender months notice yesterday then could claim from the 24th December if your last day was Thursday 23rd December)

However if they decide you didn't have a valid reason for leaving then you may be sanctioned and have the JSA stopped for up to 26 weeks

Why give up working to live off benefits.... It is not as cushy as people think, and don't get me started on what people on here think of us scroungers.

Doesn't matter how horrible you may think the job is.

There aren't many jobs out there, can you not take back your 'notice'

obviously your not giving out any information, so we don't know why you want to leave work.

Unless theres a good reason for you leaving your current job then you probably wont be allowed to receive benefits.

The OP still needs to claim, as any sanction will run from the claim date not the date of resignation.

You can apply for JSA 28 weeks after you leave work voluntary, Which seems the case for you.

That is not correct - as stated before, the OP should claim as soon as possible, but may not receive payment for some time. Also, the maximum sanction is 26 weeks.

Wrong. Why are you giving completyely incorrect information out.

Since the OP is likely to be sanctioned, they need to claim as soon as their period of notice runs out.

OP - sanctioned means you get no JSA but you may be able to claim hardship funds, although these are about 60 percent of JSA.
