You should get your data off first.

Do you have access to another PC -ideally desktop?

With a small screwdriver the laptop hard drive will be readily removable, if you're lucky and its a SATA drive (L-shaped connectors) you can hook it up directly inside the desktop PC and pull your data off. If its an IDE drive (lots of pins -in older machines) you'll need either a suitable 2.5" IDE drive caddy (from about £7) or adapter board (£2 on ebay) to do the same.

EDIT: seen your latest post, good news is it sounds like a software issue and as you have the code will be able to reinstall XP, get your data sorted and we can move from there

It's a desktop that down - I'm on a work laptop just now so taking it to pieces isn't an option.....

Can you get into the BIOS and set it to failsafe or default settings that may allow booting into windows for repair .
F2 on Dell i think for BIOS

  • you can download and burn a recovery cd from herehttp://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?/topic/150212-boot-to-recovery-console-wo-xp-cd/
this only contains and will only load the xp recovery console, when prompted press r for recovery,if it asks for administrator password hit the enter key then type chkdsk /r then hit enter again, hopefully this will repair any faults. If your desktop has a floppy drive you can download the same files from microsoft but they only offer the option to create them on 6 floppy disks http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
    hope this helps

or ANY XP cd will allow you to boot and repair, just don't use it to re-install

I've got Dell Xp pro Cd's off ebay for about a tenner (must be dell to allow it to authenticate with no problems)

    Update:

I can get into F12 Boot menu and from there into Utility Partition. Does that offer any options? Or should I just boot with the recovery console disc I've created?

  • leave the recovery cd in the drive and choose the option to boot from the cd
