MBAM does not act as a resource hog at all, because it does not run in the background. It only scans for malware when you open the program and instruct it to do so.
I would try and boot into Safe Mode, remove all your AV's using the correct removal tool, reinstall Avast, then MBAM, scan with that. Then clean up with CCleaner and do a defrag.
How did you manage to remove your toolbar?

Please describe what this is/means/ and how. Do I infer there are unsafe removal tools. What should I beware of?
My speed has recovered, as has stroke/key sensitivity and timing since I removed the Malware[had to google MBAM to see it meant this]

the malware or malwarebytes? one is bad, one is good (the free malwarebytes has no impact on speed whatsoever, because it doesn't run all the time).

correct removal tool means the one for your av, not unsafe

Sorry closed - I wouldn't know the difference.
Have just had all intervening time 'til now with strange things happening.
Saw'update available for Adobe things, so clicked it and had large print screen saying computer would restart.
Then saw screen filled with print, white on black, BUT - in blue - saw the 'safe mode' wording, never seen before.
Arrowed up to this - clicked it - and my computer opened with all ikons in columns, again magnified, on black b/g - again a format never before seen.
Broadband would not open - I have Speedtouch from Primus.
Not sure what I did, if anything, but screen then returned to normal, having warned me it was shutting.
    All is working again now.
I'm not fiddling about any more.
I can't tell whether or not my computer is protected.
