  • I would run the removal tools for AVG and McAffee as removing from control panel removes bits:
    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
    http://www.avg.com/download-tools

And then run malwarebytes Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 - FileHippo.com
Remember to go to UPDATE tab, CHECK FOR UPDATES and then run a QUICK SCAN. Remove everything it finds and post log here. Then update definitions again and run a FULL SCAN.

(Up to you but I personally wouldn't bother with the other AV scans and superantispware myself)

Not sure how or why they had McAfee on there but have revmoved both and installed Avast. :)

It's certainly running quicker. But not 'brand new' quicker type thing.

Get them to install and run CCleaner and then install and run IOBit Smartdefrag to sort out the fragmented mess that is the hard drive. Files will be in bits all over the shop and Smartdefrag will sort them all out into consecutive clusters for faster access.

I had one customer who I went to who'd not done any maintenance for four years. A quick go with CCleaner and then running Smartdefrag a few times (was that bad it needed to be) and Internet Explorer went from 5 minutes to load to 10 seconds.

Please excuse me if I join in here. Just want to say Thankyou for the advice given above.
The Thread title jumped out at me last night.
Have had horrendous probs of slow/shutdown kind, worsening over months now, with much utterly soul-destroying repeated loss of work etc.
I began last night, removed AVG and MacAfee, installed avast - 1202 errors remaining.
Everything has opened up and responded much, MUCH faster this morning.
Please guide me through next steps - shall I now complete advice of post 12, then 14?
I am very very grateful to you all.
Thankyou again for writing instructions in simple straightforward steps.

Yes, you do need to run both removal tools to clean them out proiperly. You shoud really have done this before installing your new AV though. Running MBAM would be a wise precaution.
And CCleaner and a defrag are always beneficial.
    Why 2 AV programs installed?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

No idea how or why, I'm afraid.
None of this tech.lang. means anything particularly to me.
All is back to slowslowslow ways again, since installing malware and i have a memory of removing it once before for this reason.
This post is my 2nd attempt at a reply because the keyboard stroke responses are delayed and jerky/slow-unhelpful and the whole thing froze and disappeared.
Computer has restarted several times during all of these processes.
None of my desktop ikons now work.
Typing in mse,or anything , into inet exp search box[which now seems to have made itself into IE8]brings up only the redbox 'x''Could not Find'msg. This is silly.
    Google toolbar has also gone.
I copied the results of that other log that Grandmaster refers to - it showed itself up on notepad, but has now disappeared and I cannot paste it.
Scrolling is as jerky and delayed as keyboard, although logitech mouse has new batteries.

Feeling fed up and back into 'same old, same old' again.

    What next?

Am now going to remove malware and see if that returns me to improvement that Avast install+AVG & MacAfee removal gave.
    ##############
Well, I'm stuck - that bar along the bottom has disappeared along with my clock, little ikons and Start thing. How am I supposed to do anything now?
    ##############

It's okay - scraped it up from bottom of screen - it was no more than a barely visible line.

MBAM does not act as a resource hog at all, because it does not run in the background. It only scans for malware when you open the program and instruct it to do so.
I would try and boot into Safe Mode, remove all your AV's using the correct removal tool, reinstall Avast, then MBAM, scan with that. Then clean up with CCleaner and do a defrag.
How did you mange to remove your toolbar?

  • Ampersand - It would be advisable to open up a new thread and post the posts above so that advise doesn't get mixed up!

Thankyou Grandmaster - do I just copy and paste them one by one?
