Parents have my old PC and it's painfully slow. Boots up in a reasonably quick time, but once at the desktop it takes a good couple of minutes until you can open Firefox etc.

I've done ccleaner various times as well as disk cleanup and defragmenting.

There isn't an awful lot of software on there as they only use it for the web and Skype.

I think it's the RAM, but I'm by no means that clued up. What's peoples thoughts?

Home XP SP3
Pentium 4 2.8ghz
768Mb RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX5200
60Gb Hard Drive

Now I'm not sure what the motherboard is, couldn't find that, but this comes up on start up;

Asus P4S800 ACPI Bios
Trend Chipaway R On Guard :undecided

Hope this is right? :undecided

768 meg of RAM is plenty for XP...more likely too much stuff running from boot-up. Can you post a HiJack This log for the pc ??
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I'm afraid not as I'm not at theirs often.

How can I remove startup programmes? :undecided

Would a clean install of XP help?
  • It sounds like your Internet Security may be taking up a lot of the resources. That's a small amount of RAM too, which doesn't help. If you are thinking of adding memory, go to Crucial.com and use their system scanner tool.

remote control them using teamviewer, logmein etc, and grab a hijackthis log

go into task manager, performance, and check the commit charge, if that's higher than ram, do some startup pruning, and choose a lightweight av such as avast

reinstall is almost guaranteed to speed it up to the way it was when new, but backup data first.

you don't need a ram upgrade.

defrag and ccleaner do very little for performance

replace avg8 (use the removal too) with avast, reset IE to defaults under tools, internet options, advanced. Run startuplite, and accept suggested changes. Uninstall all mcafee software. Unless they use it, uninstall google toolbar

what's the peak and current commit charge from task manager, performance

Have done that, thanks. I can't remember now, but it was less than half the total. :undecided

2 AV programs on one system is not a good idea. Especially if they're AVG and McAfee...
Remove both (use the relevant removals tools to clean up properly) and install Avira, Avast or MSE (all free downloads).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Not sure how or why they had McAfee on there but have revmoved both and installed Avast. :)

It's certainly running quicker. But not 'brand new' quicker type thing.
  • As a cover all type set of instructions from previous threads:

    1. Uninstall all unnecessary programs from Control Panel then restart your computer.
    2. Run Windows Update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ then restart your computer.
    3. Run CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com
    4. Run an anti-virus scan: http://www.free-av.com/
    5. Run an anti-spyware scan: http://www.superantispyware.com/
    6. Run an anti-malware scan: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
    7. Check the VRAM settings i.e.:

    - Click Start, then open the Control Panel.
    - Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
    - Click the Advanced tab.
    - Under Performance, click Settings.
    - Click the Advanced tab.
    - Under Virtual memory, click Change.
    - Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file (virtual memory) settings that you want to change. In almost every case, this will be your C: drive.
    - Click to select the "System managed size" option, then click Set.
    - Click OK three times and restart your computer.

    8. Run a defrag: http://www.defraggler.com/
    9. Investigate msconfig: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
    10. Perform disk error checking: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Other than the above I'd recommend re-installing XP.
