I would shop around - use the screen scrapers to make things easier!

    Good luck!

    Sounds a bit steep.

Next time you renweal go via a cashback site. You can get over £100 off for Prudential and Llyods via some cashback sites.

I just done it last night and with cashback I hopefully will get £110 it will cost me £43 to insure my car granted no claims, low mileage, not expensive car, 6 years NCD.

Direct Line are a rip off company! We moved house in August (5 miles away) and we rang the car insurance companies to notify them. I'm with Privledge and they increased my premium by £12. When I called Direct Line - they increased my husband's premium by £70  It's outrageous. Needless to say we wont be renewing with them next year.

As Jenny said Direct Line do like to take money if they havea chance but to be honest i do not see how this is a rip off or am i missing something?

You say your husband has been caught speeding 3 times in 5 years, therefore that equates to 9 points? I think only adding £203 pounds to the premium is pretty lenient in that case.

Also you say he was only a couple of MPH over the limit, the speed does not matter to an insurer, the offence does. Whether he was 15 MPH over or 3 MPH over does not make a difference im afraid.
  • The laws an A55 and we all know that. Fight any speeding allegations using the pepipoo website.

Why not ask Direct Line if your insurance was valid before you advised them of the additional points? If it wasn't, ask for a refund of your premium :)

Finally, the best way to fight back is to stick religously to the speed limit. This won't help road safety but will stop you getting tickets.

As for the Saints that never speed. RUBBISH, every driver will have exceeded a 30 mph speed limit at some time. 30.5 mph or 50 mph, the numpties who police our roads cannot see a difference.

    :)

    Hi OP,

It's only the points that affect the insurance premium, not the speeding itself.

I went to court a few years ago accused of doing 116mph in a 70-zone. It was full of holes, especially as I never go over 100mph as it's sheer bloody dangerous on the condition of Britain's roads.. It was a single copper in a fully equipped car and he didn't use ANY of his equipment, short of guessing.

I was found guility of exceeding 70mph based on the officer's professional opinion as laid down in law, but the speed was never determined.

I received 0-points, £35 costs, and £0 fine. The prosecution solicitor was totally useless too. I defended myself and my case was prepared by a Cambridge University Law Don. It's purpose was to introduce significant doubt.

My insurers have never been interested. If anything, they have been more curious to know how I did it. Getting out of a speeding conviction is almost unheard of as it's an absolute offence. There is practically no defence, short of incorrect signage etc.

Maybe the magistrate liked redheads :-p
  • Is it a rip off or not ................. I rang my father today because I knew he had got 2 speeding fines in 3 years and didn't think he was aware he had to tell his insurers. He has full no claims and no offences - excellent driver - like my husband. He phoned his insurers. They said thanks for letting them know and they wont be charging anything - obviously don't know if on renewal they will quote more or not, but at the moment his premiums have not gone up!!

I have tonight been pulled up by a traffic car on the motorway. my insurance is renewable on 27/11/10 I have accepted the fixed penalty, but after reading your post I may if I am still allowed attend Court, as it was a single Copper Seargeant though, he to my knowledge did not use any apparatus to record my speed? but told me he clocked me doing 94mph, I believe that if you do get a tug, the speed recording macines have to be calibrated etc.
I may now attend Court, fead back appreciated

    ??

No - he has 2 offences , whether his insurance company want to increase his premium is up to them.
  • the minimum you can get a ticket for is 10% over the legal speed limit to in a 30 MPH zone you can do 33MPH so 1MPH over wouldnt make a difference
